Get a baking stone that leaves about an inch of space all around and the problems with excess bottom heat are history.

works great but concerned about long term effects. Will it break? Will say it does smell awful.

Well, that depends on the stone, doesn't it?

The one I bought came with implicit instructions on how to season it and = has a

10 year warranty on breakage.

it bakes marvelous bread. I don't know what kind of "baking stone" you have down under, here in the= US there is a lot of garbage on the market too.
