PRESS RELEASE FOR DIXIE CLASSIC INTERGALACTIC BEAD FESTIVAL Atlanta, GA The Dixie Classic Intergalactic Bead Festival will take place

10AM-5PM Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27. Forty-six vendors from thirteen states will show and sell their wares of ancient to modern beads, bead books, beading supplies, and finished beads, at the North Georgia Fairgrounds - Jim R. Miller Park - 2245 Callaway Rd. SW Marietta, GA From I-75 Exit 260 west on Windy Hill Rd. south on Austell Rd. then west on Callaway Rd. Follow signs. An interesting mix of history and art, this bead extravaganza will feature over one hundred tables representing the country's finest bead vendors. The fascination with beads is not a new one. People have been admiring, wearing, and praying with beads for over forty thousand years. According to Christopher England, the man behind Intergalactic Bead Shows, "Beads are not a passing fancy. In fact, in the many years we have been hosting bead shows, beads have only grown in popularity." When asked why he thought that was, England's reply was noncommittal. "Perhaps it is because of the satisfaction that comes from applying time and concentration to a small vial of beads to create a three-dimensional piece of jewelry or sculpture. Or, it could be the instant gratification found by stringing a collection of beads into something unique that you can wear that evening. Maybe it is the inspiration one gets from seeing other people's creativity come alive. Or, as one who has attended an Intergalactic Bead Show can tell you, it may simply be the experience of seeing so many colors, textures, and patterns together in one arena that lends itself to the bead frenzy. Attending our shows is like entering a room full of potential." Indeed, this weekend's Dixie Classic Intergalactic Bead Festival will be the premier place to harness the potential of antique and modern beads of every size, description, and material. The festival will also feature local bead artists and shops as listed below. Among the noted glass beadmakers at the festival will be local artist Susan Barnes, Fire Goddess, Marietta, GA. Susan designs and creates beautiful jewelry using her own hand crafted glass beads along with fresh water pearls, hand-faceted crystal, Bali silver, and new for this season - her custom designed lead-free pewter beads. Trained and inspired by many of the leading artists in the lampwork and jewelry design field, Barnes has fashioned her own style with an eclectic blend of colors, textures, designs and movement. Her focal designer beads are available to jewelry designers, fashion retail outlets and to the public via her website and at the nearest Intergalactic Bead Show. Glass Beadmaker Lea Zinke, Clearwater, FL, named The National Bead Society's 2003 "Beadmaker of the Year", will showcase her series of beads commemorating World Bead Day 2002. The series, titled "Our America", consists of three, three-dimensional glass beads, "Mountain Majesty", "Amber Waves" and "From Sea to Shining Sea", that embody the spirit of the country's most recognizable terrain. Zinke said of the design, she "wanted something to honor our country" and for the beads to capture the recent resurgence in patriotism. Known for her intricate floral designs, Zinke has been the recipient of many awards. She was the winner of Bead and Button magazine's "Bead Dreams 2001" competition in the handmade bead category and was a finalist in "Bead Dreams 2002", just to name a few. Her designs have been featured in several publications, including Beadwork and Bead and Button magazines. Pam East, of Pinzart, Alpharetta, GA is an accomplished enamellist who has developed her own beadmaking video and line of enameling products. Seen on the Carol Duvall Show on HGTV, East enjoys sharing her expertise with people and considers teaching the craft to be one of the most rewarding aspects of her career. To the delight of the festival attendees, she will be one of the many artisans who will be demonstrating their craft this weekend in Atlanta. Enameling is essentially the art of applying glass to metal. Each bead starts as a short length of copper tubing that is placed on a special tool called a mandrel. The copper is heated in a propane torch flame, rolled in glass bits, and then reheated. As each layer of enamel is added, the mandrel is rolled in the torch flame to keep the hot glass from dripping or sagging, a technique that results in a bead with beautifully blended color and pattern. Because the tools and supplies needed are relatively inexpensive and very accessible, enamel beadmaking is the perfect way for any bead lover to create their own custom beads. To fill their impressive stock of precious and semi-precious stone beads, Rampal, Ankur, and Arun Yadav of American Raw Materials, Lilburn, GA import rough stones directly from mines all over the world to their own select manufacturing sites, where they oversee the cutting of the gems. Having an active role in all phases of the process allows them to closely control the quality of the beads while being able to offer outstanding prices. Along with nearly four thousand different stone bead varieties, including beads that no one else carries and cuts that are brand new to the gemstone world, American Raw Materials carries an extensive line of Bali and Indian silver beads and findings and Lithuanian amber. Ask them about their new stones and cuts for 2003. Visitors to this weekend's festival are sure to find something to delight them from the beads ranging from historical to modern, handcrafted to mass produced, natural materials to the newest in synthetic technology. Along with beads and bead-making supplies there will be numerous finished pieces to choose from, including beaded bracelets, pendants, necklaces, and earrings. The various artists, vendors, and collectors brought together by The Dixie Classic Intergalactic Bead Festival will be bringing Atlanta the best selection of beads in the galaxy. Let the creativity begin! ####### End #######
