PRESS RELEASE FOR NATIONAL BEAD SOCIETY - WORLD BEAD DAY FESTIVAL

Charlotte, NC The National Bead Society World Bead Day Festival will take place 10AM-5PM Saturday, Sept. 27 and Sunday, Sept. 28. Thirty-three vendors from twelve states will show and sell their wares of ancient to modern beads, bead books, beading supplies, and finished beads, at the Metrolina Expo Trade Center - 7100 Statesville Rd., Charlotte, NC From I-77 Exit 16A east on Sunset Rd. (US RT 21N) then north on Statesville Rd. (US RT 21N) Follow signs. An interesting mix of history and art, this bead extravaganza will feature eighty-five tables representing the country's finest bead vendors. The fascination with beads is not a new one. People have been admiring, wearing, and praying with beads for over forty thousand years. According to Christopher England, the man behind The National Bead Society, "beads are not a passing fancy. In fact, in the many years we have been hosting bead shows, beads have only grown in popularity." When asked why he thought that was, England's reply was noncommittal. "Perhaps it is because of the satisfaction that comes from applying time and concentration to a small vial of beads to create a three-dimensional piece of jewelry or sculpture. Or, it could be the instant gratification found by stringing a collection of beads into something unique that you can wear that evening. Maybe it is the inspiration one gets from seeing other people's creativity come alive. Or, as one who has attended one of our bead shows can tell you, it may simply be the experience of seeing so many colors, textures, and patterns together in one arena that lends itself to the bead frenzy. Attending our shows is like entering a room full of potential." Indeed, this weekend's National Bead Society World Bead Day Festival will be the premier place to harness the potential of antique and modern beads of every size, description, and material. The festival will also feature bead artists and shops as listed below. What a treat it will be for festival attendees to be able to rub elbows with the National Bead Society's Glass Beadmakers of the Year for the past three years - They are as follows: 2002 honorary Patti Cahill, Dyed in the Fire of Mars Hill, NC; 2003 honorary Lea Zinke, Jewelz of Clearwater, FL; and the just announced honorary for 2004, Beth Olson, Olson Glass, Kissimmee, FL. While each artist has a unique style and method of making her beads, the basic underlying technique and age-old tradition remain the same. Zinke specializes in garden floral beads, Cahill in her vividly colored and precisely patterned dot beads, and Olson in her amazing use of sculpture and creature forms. Each of these women has made a name for her self in the glass beadmaking world. The National Bead Society is proud to support and honor their contributions to the craft. Bead Junkies, a full-service bead shop located in Mooresville, NC will serve as the official Welcome Center for this weekend's show. Shop owner Christa Maggio is excited to participate in the National Bead Society's debut show in Charlotte. Her shop, just one year old and expanding rapidly, specializes in Czech glass, Austrian crystal, stone pendants & medallions, semi-precious stones, bali silver, seed beads and a host of other beads, tools, and stringing materials. Check in to find out more about how to book a special "Ladies Night Out" party or a birthday party for your favorite youngster. Bead Junkies also offers a diverse array of classes on such topics as wire wrapping, polymer clay, lampwork glass beadmaking, and precious metal clay. Along with representing her shop, Maggio is one of the founding members of the recently formed North Carolina Piedmont Bead Society. Show attendees will be able to obtain information about bead society activities and meetings, as well as how to become a member of the society. Local lampwork glass beadmaker Janie Jones, Grammy Glass, Matthews, NC, will demonstrate her craft for show attendees this weekend. Her passion and appreciation for the light reflective qualities of glass combine with her love of vibrant color. This dancing light makes her work a "constant source of joy and discovery" for her and her clients. Jones makes her lampwork beads by using a gas burner (called the lamp), which produces a narrow, steady, and powerful flame. Holding a glass rod in one hand, she holds the tip of the rod in the flame, melting it into a honey-like state. At the same time, she holds a special metal wire in the other hand and winds the molten glass onto the wire by constantly turning it. The bead is then shaped, either free hand using metal tools or by turning it in a metal mold. Attendees at the festival will be mesmerized as Jones demonstrates her expertise and age-old techniques while creating captivating beads in a rainbow of colors. Show attendees stopping by to see Suzanne Wieczorek, A Grain of Sand, Mooresville, NC will be enchanted by her selection of freshwater pearls in a rainbow of colors, as well as by the semi-precious gemstones, Swarovski crystals, silver and gemstone clasps, and silver findings she specializes in. According to Suzanne, who does beading herself, she is "always ready to offer tips to customers", and she only sells products that meet the high standards she uses for beading her own projects. Parents Al and Alice can often be seen assisting Suzanne at shows, and the fun, lively atmosphere the family creates together is contagious. Aside from doing the Intergalactic Bead Shows, A Grain of Sand offers their great selection and prices via the World Wide Web. Visitors to this weekend's festival are sure to find something to delight them from the beads ranging from historical to modern, handcrafted to mass produced, natural materials to the newest in synthetic technology. Along with beads and bead-making supplies there will be numerous finished pieces to choose from, including beaded bracelets, pendants, necklaces, and earrings. The various artists, vendors, and collectors brought together by The National Bead Society World Bead Day Festival will be bringing Charlotte the best selection of beads in the galaxy. Let the creativity begin! ####### End #######

Wow, isn't that kind of high for just 33 vendors?

Is this the same guy that used to do Intergalactic?
