PRESS RELEASE FOR FLORIDA SUMMER CLASSIC INTERGALACTIC BEAD FESTIVAL

Orlando, FL The Florida Summer Classic Intergalactic Bead Festival will take place 10AM-5PM Saturday, July 12 and Sunday, July 13. Forty-one vendors from fourteen states will show and sell their wares of ancient to modern beads, bead books, beading supplies, and finished beads, at the Maitland Civic Center - 641 S. Maitland Ave. Maitland, FL From I-4 Exit 90A east on Maitland Blvd. then south on Maitland Ave. approximately 1 mile on right. Follow signs. An interesting mix of history and art, this bead extravaganza will feature over ninety tables representing the country's finest bead vendors. The fascination with beads is not a new one. People have been admiring, wearing, and praying with beads for over forty thousand years. According to Christopher England, the man behind Intergalactic Bead Shows, "Beads are not a passing fancy. In fact, in the many years we have been hosting bead shows, beads have only grown in popularity." When asked why he thought that was, England's reply was noncommittal. "Perhaps it is because of the satisfaction that comes from applying time and concentration to a small vial of beads to create a three-dimensional piece of jewelry or sculpture. Or, it could be the instant gratification found by stringing a collection of beads into something unique that you can wear that evening. Maybe it is the inspiration one gets from seeing other people's creativity come alive. Or, as one who has attended an Intergalactic Bead Show can tell you, it may simply be the experience of seeing so many colors, textures, and patterns together in one arena that lends itself to the bead frenzy. Attending our shows is like entering a room full of potential." Indeed, this weekend's Florida Summer Classic Intergalactic Bead Festival will be the premier place to harness the potential of antique and modern beads of every size, description, and material. The festival will also feature local bead artists and shops as listed below. Glass beadmakers Beth Olson and husband "Raybaby" Olson, of Beth Olson Glass, Kissimmee, FL, specialize in murrine beads, which are glass beads that contain an intricate glass image inside. A murrine is made by first creating the inner image from a mosaic of glass and next stretching it into a cane. The cane is then sliced into individual images, which are incorporated into the finished beads. The Olson's' murrines usually contain a character or animal such as a panda bear, tiger, toucan, or flower. Glass sculptors for over 20 years, both Olson's worked for Disneyland in Tokyo, Japan making glass Disney characters, an experience that is evidenced by their amazing array of tiny sculpture-like beads in the shape of dragons, fairies and flowers. Attendees in Orlando this weekend will be privileged to see Beth's expertise as she takes torch to glass, creating beads that are as delightful and unique as her personality. Glass lampwork beadmaker Terre Beasley of Scarlet Fire Glass Beads, Cocoa, FL makes groovy glass beads, often in the shape of palm tree studded landscapes, space-man galaxies, rainbows, dragonflies, & mushrooms, just to name a few. Although she has been influenced by other glass lampwork beadmakers, being self-taught helps her stay true to her own creativity and imagination. Terre has been making glass beads for six years, and has been known to sell her beads at Grateful Dead concerts, Intergalactic Bead Shows, and online. In addition to offering her own glass beads and those made by her son Jerry, festival attendees will find a variety of other beads and jewelry components, such as semi-precious and sterling silver pendants, at her booth. Terre also carries the beautiful Chinese Artisan-carved, boxwood ojime, netsuke, and inro boxes, as well as interchangeable bead rings and beads. Locals John and Becky Matrazzo, of Tatanka Beads, Cocoa, FL will be serving as a welcome center to festival attendees this weekend. Their shop, located in the historic Cocoa Village area, is a full-service bead store that offers seed beads, lampwork glass beads, stone, bone, and wood beads, Czech and Swarovski crystal beads, Bali sterling silver beads, and various findings and beading supplies. The shop also features Becky's unique fiber/bead art. In a style reminiscent of Plains Indians artwork, Becky creates and sells baskets which incorporate beading techniques with collected materials from the mountains & streams of the Northwest. At the festival this weekend John will bring a selection of treasures from the shop, including size 11 seed beads, Bali silver toggles, and handmade semi-precious stone pendant slides. See the Tatanka booth for information regarding the upcoming beading and wire-wrapping classes offered at their shop. Mary Chambers, of Imagine That.. a bead store, in Ormond Beach, will move part of her full-service bead store to the festival. Chamber's says, "Much like the festival, our shop is a reflection of the diverse appeal of beads." She carries a full spectrum of beads and beading supplies, ranging from inexpensive craft supplies for Scouts and other civic groups to one-of-a-kind artisan beads. The bead world combines such a varied and diverse group of people that Chambers' clients include the home hobbyist, the professional jewelry designer, and the collector of antique beads. Her job is to satisfy them all with one-stop shopping. When not assisting in the selection of beads to complete a new design, Chambers is always available to those seeking expert advice on finishing that special beaded jewelry piece. Visitors to this weekend's festival are sure to find something to delight them from the beads ranging from historical to modern, handcrafted to mass produced, natural materials to the newest in synthetic technology. Along with beads and bead-making supplies there will be numerous finished pieces to choose from, including beaded bracelets, pendants, necklaces, and earrings. The various artists, vendors, and collectors brought together by The Florida Summer Classic Intergalactic Bead Festival will be bringing Orlando the best selection of beads in the galaxy. Let the creativity begin! ####### End #######
