Carol Duvall's forced retirement

Subject: [Pagan Crafters2 Yahoo group] Carol Duvall's forced retirement

Hi everyone, I just got back from attending the CHA (Craft & Hobby Association) Show in Las Vegas and I have some very disturbing news to report. I spoke to someone who is a friend of Carol Duvall's. Carol is doing great and just returned from a vacation to the Artic. Isn't that cool? The disturbing thing is why she left the Carol Duvall Show. It wasn't because of her health (like a lot of us thought) or that she decided to retire. The network (HGTV) decided that she was too old! They want a younger person in the slot. I am so angry! How dare they force her into retirement. She was the best thing they had!!!!

I don't want to publisize the name of the person who told me this (my decision, not hers). She was a regular on the show and might get into trouble with the network by spreading her name with this. I will personally guarantee that her word about this can be trusted. I told her that I would spread the word throughout the online craft community.

She wasn't sure if it would help Carol get her show back (which she desperately wants) but she suggested that we all write letters to HGTV stating how angry we are with their decision. She said that she would pass the word onto Carol that her fans are mad and will do everything we can to get her back. She told me that Carol would be so happy to hear that we are trying.

Please, if you love her show as much as I do, write a letter to HGTV complaining about this age discrimination and spread the word to other groups that you belong to, asking them to do the same. We, as crafters, need Carol back on the air! Here is the url for sending your complaint to them:

I promise that later I will post more about the CHA Show and the great new products I found. We had so much fun there. Right now I'm just so angry about Carol that I want the word to spread as quickly as possible. Please feel free to forward my post to any group you think can help with this. Jan (Myrddyn)

Hi, Jan, I've emailed HGTV. I will follow this up with a snail mail letter. I've been told that the networks pay more attention to regular mail since they think if someone spends 39 cents to express their opinion, they must really believe it. There's also a formula for that - if TIIC receive one letter, they feel that there are 500 people who also feel the same way, but didn't write. One letter CAN make a difference. I'm really rather annoyed at several networks who have cancelled funny, creative shows because they annoy the religious right. I hate it when networks cave into that kind of pressure. I'll be sending out quite a bit of mail this week. Patti

I heard about this and read this letter on another newsgroup at least a year ago or more. That makes me suspicious that it is something that may have started out as fact, but has now attained urban legend status (like the old Craig Shergold story). Has anyone else seen this in the past?

I saw Carol Duvall in November (and a great number of regulars from the show) and noone said anything about her being forced out of the show. I'd take this letter with a grain of salt...Carol is a lot older than most folks think and she said she was looking forward to having some free time and planning the Crafter's Cruises.

The person who posted it, Jan, posted it as first hand. She runs the PaganCrafters2 group. I have not known her to lie or exaggerate etc. I will pass your concerns along and maybe she can sign up here and address your concerns (or affirm them). I do not think she got it from any other newsgroup message...

Ingrid,

The letter clearly states that she heard it from a friend of Carol Duvall's, not from Carol or HGTV. Therefore it is not first-hand knowledge. I never said that she exaggerated or lied. All I said was that when I met Carol Duvall in November AND when I spoke to polymer clay artists that were regulars on her show, nothing was said about her being forced out.

Gina, One more comment to your post. You may have seen some of the information in my letter earlier, but not my letter. I wrote this less than a week ago. Jan (Mydyyn)

I just searched for "Carol Duvall" on Google Groups in the rec.crafts.rubberstamps newsgroup, and found a very similar letter circulating in March 2004. It also urged people to contact HGTV. It was followed up by a post saying that it wasn't true.

HGTV has letters from Carol about her current plans:

Barbara, It is no wonder that they didn't speak of this to you. When I wrote to pcpolyzine I received this reply:

Dear Jan -

Thanks for writing. I also just got back from CHA and wasn't it a great time for the most part. I want to be honest and tell you that the news about Carol is kind of old news. We covered that whole incident in pcPolyzine last year as it was occurring. We told readers how HGTV had made the decision not to pick up any more of Carol's show. Readers wrote letters and made phone calls to HGTV headquarters as well as to Weller-Grossman, the production company.

Carol spoke with me last year at the show about how she and her assistant (Cheryl) and a segment producer were called into the executive offices of HGTV and were sort of slapped on the hand for having given me the real information, which I had then published on my website.

Carol and Cheryl made it crystal clear that Weller-Grossman had nothing to do with the show being cancelled and in fact treat Carol like a queen. We made quite a bit of noise about it an caused a fuss. Carol says it is not much different from when the Home Show was cancelled years ago and fans protested outside the production company. She said had it not been for the Home Show being cancelled, the Carol Duvall Show on HGTV that we all LOVE would never have existed. She meant that something good came out of what we all considered something terrible. So we went along with her attitude about it believing that something great will come out of this too.

Thank you for caring about Carol so very much. She is a special woman and we all love her.

Write to me any time.

Sincerely, Jeannie Havel, Publisher

PS - What company were you with at CHA?

Patti, Thank you so much for taking the time to help Carol. I know she will appreciate it. She will survive no matter what, but I know that any effort we make will help her to feel better about the outcome. When I told her friends what I was going to do, they said that Carol will deeply appreciate it. I told Donna Kato, Pricilla Houser, the young guy from Ranger Industries (sorry I can't remember his name right now), and many owners of stamping companies that appeared on her show and they all said they would let Carol know of our effort to get her back. Thanks again, Jan (Myrddyn)

Gina, I did not make this up!!!!! Of course HGTV is going to have a glossy version of what happened. And if in fact you did find a similar letter, please know that I didn't see it. I got my facts from people who do know what happened. You'll never find a retractrion from me. Yes, she is planning her life to carry on after being canceled because she is too old. She is not ready to sit in a rocking chair just yet. I hope that she has more fans who are willing to put up a fight than ones who accect HGTV's version. Jan (Myrddyn)

you want Carol back. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It won't work.

Sure -- the religious right is always doing this with great success, but they're also highly organized and HUGE. They have lobbyists, they have big money behind them, they know how to go about it. They're pros and they carry a lot of weight.

Letters from fans, on the other hand......well, you better get organized and muscle up her fan club if you want any results. Even then I doubt it will have any effect.

I know it probably won't do any good, but isn't letting her know that we care better than letting her think it doesn't really matter to us? I'm sure she'll hear that fans were trying. Jan
