Doing something tangible to help - Sorta OT

But not completely OT.

Kathy N-V....we love you....Diana and I have been talking about you (all good, I promise). We want to do something for you that is tangible. I wish we could take away your pain, but since that's not possible, we'd like to give you a HUG, so that we can be with you, supporting you, even if we can't be there in person. So, to that end, Diana and I are going to be organizing the making of a quilt for you, like the one that was made for Rebekah, and the one that was made for me when I had my hysterectomy. Normally we would keep something like this a secret, but we wanted you to know immediately how much we love you and are supporting you through this.

Here's the plan: We would like people to donate what they feel comfortable donating, whether it be fabric for the top and backing, or batting, or thread, or even money for postage. I'll be assembling the quilt top, and basting it, then send it to Diana for quilting.

We need: quilt blocks or fabric squares, 6.5" square, or yardage. Jewel tones, please. These need to be mailed to me by October 25th. If you want my address, please email me, and I'll send it right out to you. Craftigirl at earthlink DOT net that is also my address for my PayPal account. If you wish to make a monetary donation, please earmark it "Kathy N-V's HUG"

Now, Kathy, don't fight us on this. It's a done deal.

I just need to add.... By fabric, we mean good quilters 100% cotton. Its available at online quilt stores, or Joanns fabric or sometimes the backwall of Walmarts craft area. If you are able to see through it, it is to thin. Thanks in advance for helping make this happen. Diana

It's a thought. I've seen some really beautiful beaded crazy quilts.

However, my practical side has a couple of thoughts. One problem is that the quilt would have to be beaded after quilting. The other problem is that beading on quilts is time consuming, and we want this to get to Kathy ASAP. On the other hand, if someone wanted to bead it after we're done with it...we can discuss that, too.

I have a feeling you will be wading in enough fabric to make a lot more then one quilt...

Any other way us non-quilters can help out and put something personal into it?

I'll brainstorm on that one, and get back to you. The only idea coming up at the moment is maybe helping defray shipping costs or sending me some kind of "signature" (not like you'd put on a legal document, just something that has your name and location) to put somewhere onto the quilt.

I love this idea. Do you want beaded squares?

Diana...what do you think about this? Could you quilt around beads if the beading was lightly done?

Yes, please let us know if these embellishments would be ok:

A plain piece of fabric, 6.5"X 6.5 inches, signed with a permanent on fabric pen , or a picture drawn on, works nicely. There are pens called pigma that are super for fabric. Some people use a stamp and fabric permanent paint to personalize a plain square. There are other non sewn kinds of things you can make if the above suggestion seems to plain. You might have to venture into unknown territories of fusible interfacings and such to do them. It isnt hard, and if you are lucky enough to have a quilt or fabric store near you with helpful and kind people in it they would be happy to guide you thru simple processes of making a picture with fabric. We do want the non quilty folks here to be able to express their love for Kathy too. If there is a way I can help please email me at mdcurtis at baldwin-telecom dot net . Diana

And while you're looking at the fabric at JoAnn's, you can pick up a couple of packs of CocoaCats!
