Dumb Question

Do most of the people here make beads?

Hmmm - no, I think there are a good handful that do. There are also bead stringers, beadweavers, people who collect beads, and people who just love them. Why do you ask?

I like beads but don't make them. I think I would fall into the category of collector, but I am new at it. It seemed like the posts I read here were from people who made their own beads and I wondered if I was out of place.

I got interested in beads about a year ago when a friend of mine ran into some other bead collectors and I over heard them talk 'bout them for over an hour. It was fascinating to me. I never knew there was so much interest in beads, and it made since to me hearing about it. Oh and then it didn't end there, another person who heard them talking chimed in because she also collected beads. It shocked me that I never knew about all this. You hear about stamps and cards, but at least in my case, beads were never thought of as something people seriously collected.

The idea of trading beads is especially interesting. I heard that beads are not meant to stay put but they like to move around. And that is like me. I don't like to stay put.

And what a fun way to learn about cultures and history!

I am sold. So is my paradigm accurate in your world of beads, or did I just hear a couple of people who don't represent the bead world?

Hi, Dan,

I don't make beads but I use them and was introduced to the addiction that is lampwork here. (Thanks, guys!). My husband makes beads and I use them.

It may seem that there is a preponderance of lampworkers here but it's mostly because they're a chatty lot, and when their work is for sale they like to announce it to all the people who love to look or buy.

People who do jewellery or beadwork in other forms may not post as much about their work which is a shame but they're out there in the newsgroup and read regularly.

If we use beads, buy them, make them, make things from them or simply love to look at them we 'represent the bead world'.

You're not out of place at all! We're all bead lovers here. Feel free to hang out! It's great to hear your story. Beads have been around since time immemorial - they're universal. :) WELCOME!

I don't make beads; I collect and sell gemstone beads, but I read these posts every day...I have learned so much about beads(and the individuals who post) in this newsgroup...found resources for findings I needed to make jewelry....bought lampwork beads from several of the artists and hopefully will continue to do so...and made some wonderful friends! I hope your association with this group will be as rewarding for you as it has been for me and many others! gmcarolyn

1) It's not a dumb question.

2) No one's ever tried to count the people "here" -- we have a lot of lurkers (people who read but don't post), and some people who come and go (like me). What are the percentages? Nobody will ever know.

3) I, for one, do not melt glass to make beads, nor do I make them out of polymer clay, or felt, etc. But I do make beaded beads out of seed beads. So maybe if you clarified your terms -- do you mean "Do most of the people here make lampwork beads?" would be better.

much interest in beads......... ~~~~~~~~ Since pretty much the beginning of man! It was the first personal adornment, the first money, etc. Beads have always had a strange, spellbinding effect on humans.

I usually sell beads & jewelry, but I do often make pendants out of shells, vintage jewels, found objects, etc. Hubby used to do a lot of polymer clay work before he became ill - I hope he will be able to resume making them soon!

Welcome to the group!

I LOVE that beads - things with a hole through them - are such an intrinsically, eviscerally fascinating thing for our species.

Here's a questi>>I over heard them talk 'bout them for over an hour. It was fascinating to me. I never knew there was so

I love the beadwork of the Crow Indians. They do such tight work.

thanks Sooz, I missed that. Yup, Maren is female.

(and Maren grows "stuff", not just beads, but only in some leftover spare time at the moment, is a full time programmer, wife of a full time working guy with type I diabetes, mother to a high school senior, 3 cats - and living in a house that hasn't had real electricity for almost 2 months now (but it's paid for!), so everything takes twice as long which is why I can only grow stuff in my _non-existent_ spare time.)
