OT: Engine news

Things are getting exciting.

Yesterday's news was that if an agency like TACOM (tank automotive command, for all land based vehicles) will commit to an allocation in the future (say '06), DARPA (govt and DoF advanced research) will commit to a "small amount of developing funding" in '04 and '05. And if DARPA decides to consider a use for our engine, as a NASA representative is recommending, TACOM will meet with us, and DARPA is actively seeking a new propulsion system to recommend to TACOM.

We have also been talking to the former Director for GM's partnership in govt program, PNGV, Partnership for New Generation Vehicle, which is seeking an 80% reduction in emissions. He is working with not only the big auto makers, but also the big engine developers and manufacturers.

And now, we have more news. Our NASA contact spoke with GM's Director of Advanced Engine Research. And the GM honcho has asked for a meeting!

We are supposed to have the third patent continuation and the corp consolidating the assignees, by the end of next week so we can get serious about these talks.

I want to be everyone's fairy bead mother!!!!

Very big. Multiples of millions is a "small amount" of research money to these guys. The military is interested in it, and I honestly think it's possible they would replace their diesels with this new engine. The auto manufacturers are interested in it for it's reduced polution, and cheaper manufacturing costs of engines. The engine makers, especially for trucks are interested in the variable compression ratio carburetor which would eliminate the need for 3/4 of those gears the truckers have to mess with. And it could be used in helicopters instead of the turbine engines they now use.

The basic unit of this engine has only three moving parts.

And I'm trying not to be too excited.

Hey now, I always liked trucks with more gears! Just don't understand big trucks with automatics. (Have I ever told you all the problems I've had with automatics?) Those gears come in really handy sometimes and there's more thought involved in the driving process (IMHO)

It's just that when I was first driving it seemed like all the bad stuff happened in automatics. First speeding ticket, first accident (and so far only one while moving {knock, knock}) and I had a loader fall on the cab of an automatic dump truck I was driving (fortunately I was leaning over playing with all the new knobs and switches) (and now I know why those are called "headache" racks!) I think I'm pretty much over it now because all the cars we've had since I stopped driving truck have been automatic (has it really been five years already?) (doesn't seem like it)

I also drive by sound and the "feel" of a vehicle. If you don't understand that, there's no way I can describe it. You just get into the "groove" of it and become part of it. Kinda zen in a way. Probably why I like driving so much.

Oh, I know lots of people who much prefer the control you have with standards. But, as I said, the change would increase the range of the gears, not shift any gears. It's a function incorporated in the cylinder if I understand correcly.

This sounds like very big news not only for you, but potentially for the world. May I shake your hand?

Wow! I am just catching up on posts and came across this - that all sounds really exciting, Tina! Those sure are some big wigs you are dealing with. I hope it all goes well. :) I am so curious as to this engine, but I know you probably can't post the specifics in public yet. I'll just have to read about it in a future Popular Mechanics or something. :)

Congratulations to all the people involved in gestating this engine! This sounds ultra-promising.

That'll be one heck of a trip. In both senses of the word.

I hope it happens.
