OT - Rescue dog hero from Hurricane Katrina

Here's some good news. A follow up to a post of several years ago. Some of you may remember that my husband works for DOT in NJ. DOT has a number of rescue dogs, one of whom they sent down to Mississippi after the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Their handler was very concerned about her dog because of reports of other rescue dogs dying within days of being in the contaminated waters.

I am very pleased to report that DOT's rescue dog is still alive and doing well. As a matter of fact, he will be a guest of honor at "bring your kids to work" day tomorrow.

YAY!!!

So is the rescue dog going as somebody's kid?

Not exactly, he's going as part of the special presentations they have for the kids. The divisions within DOT give talks, video diaries, etc. to explain what the various branches of DOT do. I imagine the dog's handler will talk about how the dog assists in search and rescue of people who have traffic accidents in remote places like cars going off bridges, in mountainous areas, rescue of climbers in parks, etc.

DOT also wants to make children aware of search/rescue dogs so they won't be afraid of them, similar to the community outreach programs the police do with K-9 dogs.

I was just being a smart-ass, Patti, thinking of dogs as "fur-kids". I'm a little surprised kids would be afraid of rescue dogs, never having had fear of animals myself. Usually around here the problem people have with their "professional dogs", like police dogs or sled dogs, is teaching people NOT to approach them as if they were pets.

I'll bet the event went well and am glad he survived the terrible conditions of the aftermath of Katrina. I didn't know DOT had their own rescue dogs.
