Question about multi strand necklaces

I've tried to make a couple of multi-strand necklaces, but I can't seem to get the strand lengths to look right together. Is there a secret to knowing how long each strand should be?

I know there are designs that would be exceptions, but I'm talking about designs like:

I start with the shortest strand, crimp it to the clasp and then design the other ones so they will drape around it. If you start out with the longest strand, your shortest strand may end up being too short for your neck. You also have to consider your bead sizes will take up more room if you are using lampwork beads on one strand and not on the other, etc. There's a tool you can buy called a necklace sizer which would help you with this. Some people also prefer 2 inches between each strand of the necklace 18", 20", 22", 24", etc.

Before you start designing, you should have at least a target idea of what your shortest and longest strands will be. If you are designing for someone in particular, you need to know how "busty" they are, especially if you are doing longer necklaces.
