Question from Newbie

Hello everyone. Haven't been on here in a while. Got another Question for you Purveyors of Wisdom in here. My wife makes Jewelry from beads and wire. One of my hobbies is making Glass Beads. I haven't been doing it very long, and I've got a long way to go before I can make some of the breath taking creations that I've seen posted here and on ebay.

That said, I've seen advertised some glass bead presses, where you put a glob of molten glass in a mold and stamp it together and it forms a pre-formed bead. This would make my beads much more uniform. Before I kick out a ton of cash for these things. Has anyone ever used them and do they work well? I've had glass stick to tools that I am using to work the glass, and most of these forms are made from brass, so I wonder how much it would stick in the mold?

Thank you all in advance. Rick

Hi Rick,

I have a couple and LOVE them. I also have a lentil press that is like tongs. They're a bit cheaper.

If I had a bunch of extra money kicking around, I'd love to have more molds. I think I love all the shapes.

I've never had any trouble with sticking. With the tong press, I dip it in water to cool it after every press, but I think it's stainless and not brass.

The molds are a little more complicated to use than just "stamping." You kind of have to get the general shape to start with. You might want to google some intructions on using the molds.
