but it looks like a Kandice bead on the inside, with a Tink bead on the outside.

Those are just stunning! I love everything I've seen from her.
I just spent a whole week trying to do encased florals, and they all suck. I'm no good at them! She's magic.
Kalera, I posted to Wet Canvas a while back about my encased florals epiphany. Here's a link:
OK Tink, you have inspired me to get Back On The Floral Wagon. Do you perchance still have a pic of the bead you describe? I honestly don't think I have ever done plunged florals properly, and it may help me to see an image of the process you decribe.
Oh, and have you mastered fully encased florals? My fully encased florals are a nightmare. Sigh! Practice, practice, practice.
I make pretty good scuptural beads, lizards and fish and suchlike. The irony? I DON'T REALLY WANT TO MAKE SCULPTURAL BEADS!
I don't feel I have *any* aspect of torchwork mastered. Yet.
I'll try to dig up a good pic later. In the meantime, it sounds to me as though either your base bead is too warm when you encase, your encasing glass is too hot or you're being too forceful with the wrap.
When encasing goes the way it should, it's like painting a beautiful crystal coating on the outside of the bead. Almost effortless. Try spending a day/evening doing nothing but encased florals. Nothing else.
Better yet, try doing some surface florals. Not the kind that are raised on the surface of the bead, but regular melted in encased florals without the encasing if that makes sense. It's really good practice!
That's a good idea... my surface florals are not bad, but I tend to quickly skim past them and dance on to the next thing.
I think the petal distortion is happening somehow when I melt my encasing smooth, because they'll all look fine until the very end. Sigh!
If my attention span were longer, I'd probably be better. I shouldn't complain too much, though; beadmaking is one of exactly two things to hold my interest over a span of years. I usually get really intensely into something for a couple of months, only to forget all about it and move on to the next thing, like a butterfly going from flower to flower.
