]Somewheres.... I used to have a link to a site called something like "Squirrel ]Fishing"

there were a couple of sites, at one time, with illustrations and drawings of the things one couple had done to keep the squirrels out of their birdfeeders. by the time they were done, the entire yard was one huge maze - and they still hadn't stopped the squirrels.

They can defeat those too... I saw on a show once they worked in pairs to defeat the feeders. I say, give up.. get them some unshelled corn to play with. Its worth it to see the antics they get up to. Diana

I got the squirrels to stop raiding my feeders by a) putting out easy-to-get-at "squirrel chow" and b) filling the birdfeeders with stuff that squirrels hate.

Unfortunately, squirrel chow also attracts chipmunks. I wouldn't mind the chipmunks, except that they dig up all my flowers and make a big mess of dirt on the balcony. At least the squirrels back-fill their holes.

So, the squirrels get no chow until late fall, when the flowerpots are all frozen. :-(

tried that. didn't work. they want what is in my feeders - the much more expensive sunflower chips.

Safflower and/or thistle seeds. Finches and doves like the thistle, and everyone else eats the safflower, although they're not as enthusiastic about it as they are sunflower... :-)

Well, we have a *pet* squirrel we've named Rocky who has taken up residence in our front yard (he hibernated underneath our front walk, LOL). He leaves the bird feeders alone, but that's because we feed him. He has his own dish next to the entrance to his home, and he seems pretty content to eat out of it, LOL. He doesn't bother the bird feed that's on the ground much unless the birds steal his food.

ah - thistle seeds i have. didn't know about the safflower and the squirrels not liking it. i'm at the point where i'm refilling the feeders every other day and sometimes every day, just for the birds.

I hear you, and if I didn't live in a city I'd be using a .22 instead of calling the exterminator. Of course, one of our neighbors isn't exactly helping the cause: she buys ears of dried corn and puts them out for the squirrels. She also allowed them to gnaw a hole in the fascia of her house so they can live in her attic when it gets cold.

We have periodic infestations of skunks in the neighborhood. We got a humane trap and call animal control when we catch one. They come and get Mr. Skunk (or Mr. Feral Cat, Mr. Raccoon or Mr. Possum), do whatever they do with nuisance animals (I don't want to know, exactly), clean and return my trap. I do this because Sophie the Wonder Dog would kill them all, and I don't want my poor dog in quarantine for her whole life. (She caught a raccoon once, which amazed me because it was at least twice her size, and was quarantined for rabies for 30 days)

We don't have bird feeders, but it's not because of the squirrels. It's because of the pigeons! If you put out a bird feeder, you'll have a yard full of pigeons in no time. Since I like my cars and their paint jobs, I don't like pigeons. There's also the fact that I'm petrified of birds, which probably factors in the whole bird feeder thing, too.

semi-suicidal when it comes to crossing the road.<

Squirrels have a very strong instinct to return to their home whenever they sense danger. Sadly, their home is often on the other side of the road. :-(
