So...what's everyone designing?

After the Christmas crunch of special orders, I'm having trouble settling down to design. I'm a little burned out. Here are some of the ideas I have, which I should be working on: Some Oriental themed necklaces using centerpieces of that fake cinnabar, bamboo which is dyed to look like coral and spacers. Several in Red/Black and some in blue shades. Embellishing necklaces using my dichro donuts as centerpieces, some lampwork, Bali silver. More gemstone bracelets - I'm sold out (YES!!!). Making more glass!!! I'm hoping that writing these down will inspire me to get off my butt! I'm going out with one of my Bead Sisters to our fave bead store on Friday, I know that will help. So...what is everyone else doing or not doing or thinking about doing?

Well... after an unexpectedly excellent Christmas as far as sales went I am drained of creative flow!! :) I have one swap that I am beginning to get excited about with only a few days left but other than that my muse seems to be in Barbados recovering! :)

I have been trying some totally new designs/techniques and using my mom as a sounding board. So far I am 3 for 3 (she snagged them all up!). But still my enthusiasm is kind of quiet right now.

Mardi Gras is here now (till Feb 28) and as the town gears up for the multitude of parades and celebrations I'm sure I'll recover my 'groove'... by osmosis/contact high if nothing else!!!

I am learning how to make Russian leaves and have plans for a necklace of them. So far, half of one has taken a day!! They can only get quicker. Have a new gallery to supply and have lots of ideas in my head.

Cheers, Jan

whine ...

trying to catch up from being away two weeks and being sick for 2 days afterwards. I'm behind on everything. - I was behind on most when we left, but of course it only got worse in the meantime. -

I want to do something with my Kalera beads. I even have an idea (don't know whether it'll turn out, I can't visualize it very well), but, my desk is full of stuff that needs to be filed before I can really start. Whine.

I just bought a ton of beading supplies online..pearls, hill tribe and bali silver, seed beads, spools of soft flex, toggles, crimp beads, lampwork..I'm expecting quite the bead bounty in the mail these next few days. I need to restock, because the women where I work have bought up a lot of my stock and I don't have anything left they haven't seen already.

I'm also making a necklace for my mother's friend, a necklace for my mother out of lapis coin beads, a long lariat with seed beads and lampwork..I'm up to my eyes in unfinished projects, but work isn't allowing me enough time to get to them all.

Currently working on a multi-strand seed & crystal necklace with a 'fire' theme'.

Also doing quite a bit with polymer clay - creating complex canes and making kaliedesope (ala Sarah Shriver) items with the results.

I have been trying to make some bracelets like Eni Oken does, with the

28 g wire? I made one with some teal and purple triangle beads and peridot chips. I don't think it turned out too bad, but I made it in brass wire because I wasn't confident enough to try silver wire:) Maybe after a few more! Cindy

Are you back living in New Orleans now? What is your housing and work situation? Tell us how you're doing now that the shock is gone, but reality is sinking in.

I always get hung up on the most mundane stuff. Putting the goodies together and getting the colors and balance just right is very satisfying. Doing the final tweaking and doing the findings is a chore. But what I'm really having a problem with is getting things ready for presentation.

Part of the problem is settling for doing things in a boring, OK way. I want to do things up beautifully, but if I insist on doing that, I'll never get it done to my satisfaction. So I've decided I need to just print boring business cards with less information than a business card or personal card (so I can place it somewhere for consignment without competing with the business).

But I've also got to put up a description and price, and save it along with a photo, so I can pull the information for an inventory list. It's all of this last stuff that's driving me crazy.

They say that something worth doing is worth doing well. Trouble is, there is such a long list of associated skills. I wish I has Kandace's skills in those areas, but I just don't.

So I need to go by the other saying. If something is worth doing, it's worth doing badly, if that's the only way I can do it. Saving the greatest effort for the most significant of your skills. So you can give the most effective use for your energy. Therefore, I'm doing some very boring cards, and taking very inadequate pictures. And it's still hard for me to do that part of it.

Have you thought about using a spreadsheet for keeping all that stuff accessible to you? It's made keeping track of things a lot easier for me. Would be even easier if I'd enter the names of the photo files... :)

Ain't reality grand! :) Although I was born in New Orleans I live in Lake Charles. This area was hit by hurricane Rita; the younger, and only slightly less nasty, sister to Katrina.

Austin and I had moved into a temporary house down the street; one we thought was minimally damaged... until the first post-hurricane rainstorm when rain poured through the bedroom ceiling! The awaited repairs, other than temporarily patching the roof, never began. I got complacent and have been here long enough that the word temporary was, unfortunately, fading. Other than the roof/ceiling damage this is a nice well-maintained house and I had started getting comfy here!

A few nights ago I woke up at around 4am and groggily wondered why the blanket was really wet. Got up and turned on the light to watch in groggy amazement as water dripped from the ceiling in oh ... about TWELVE places, approximately the width of my bed.

Vaguely recalling the nasty thunder that rolled all night and the sound of fairly torrential rain I just stood there, staring at the ceiling like some baby turkey admiring the sky. I finally realized I had to do something and moved pretty quickly then to wake Austin (he still sleeps with gramma!), change his clothes and plant him on the couch with pillow and blanket. Then on to cover the bed and carpet in plastic bags and pots and pans. Found another blanket and got on the other end of the couch with my own pillow. Woke up 7-ish, glad the rain had stopped. After loading the machine with wet blankets and putting a fan near the damp mattress (barely damp, thank goodness) I got a phone call from the realty company. Oh good just the people I wanted to talk to today... ummm wait, why are they calling me?

Seems the owner of this house informed the realty co. that I need to move out so that work can be started on this house. And, for now, there are virtually no properties available that even come close to what I can afford or am willing to live in (and believe me, I'm willing to lower my standards as far as location and condition some... just not completely.) I have a really good relationship with the realty company and they are going to try to buy me some time; little hope that I can hold out until the end of my original lease though (end of March).

So I spent half an hour on the phone with FEMA to try and find out why I never heard from them regarding the travel trailer, since that was my last option/fall back plan. I got the same answer I've gotten the last 4 calls... they have no idea why I haven't heard from someone higher on the food chain.

So I am on a hunt to find some livable space for Austin and I, while the realty company does the same. I so hate packing and moving... again, for the 2nd time in 3 months. That is, once I find a place. Oddly enough (or not) landlords have doubled, and in some cases tripled, the rents locally on the few places that have come available. *grrrrrr* Supply and demand... even at triple rent places are snatched up in a matter of hours!

No worries though... I'm over whining about it. I'll do all I can and The Universe will take care... I guess I just have some more 'learning' to do!!! :)

My cousin who lives in Ft. Walton Beach, FL has been through, oh, 4 or 5 hurricanes in the past 18 months or so, and I'm afriad he'd have this advice for you: Don't hold your breath waiting for FEMA to do anything. He's still waiting for them to get around to picking up after Ivan...
