Taking back the n/g

Hi, all, Thought I would post about BEADS here, since this is the purpose of this n/g. I really hate all this dumb spam which has appeared lately. I finished a late Christmas present for my boss (she and I were on vacation, so it's not as bad as it sounds). I used Ocean Jasper in various color tones of brown, rust, mustard, green with white spots, along with five gold filled filigree beads in the front. Haven't put the clasp on yet, have to go out and buy some g/f crimps. I almost never use gold findings and I'm sure I probably have some g/f crimps around here somewhere... Anyway, if I have time and can figure out how to post on here, I'll post a pic later. Have a great, beady day, everyone!! I'm going to make this the year I have more time for myself, make more glass, and update the website. What is everyone else working on?

I am working on a beading a bottle. At the end of November I went out to dinner with my ex work colleagues, we had our Christmas party early. I got some sparkling water to drink and was quite taken with the cylindrical shape of the bottle. So I brought it home. Ideas for beading a cover for was running riot in my head. So I am doing that, and next week when my ex work friends and I meet up again for my birthday celebrations. I shall take the bottle with me since we are going back to the same Italian restaurant. I want to make lots of jewelry, as elaborate as possible. Eni Oken has me inspired. I want to mix lots of color and textures to make very, very interesting jewelry. As my customers have had me on a monotone spree for the past several years, it will be a great relief to work with color again!!!!

Can't do this until I make some money first (or is that backwards? LOL). But it will happen.

Much love -- becki

Then I'll start in on some spring, valentine, St. Patrick's Day and Easter-themed projects. I recently made a brown / gold bracelet, and had to run to a LBS to get the g/f clasp, chain and headpins for it. Don't seem to keep g/f on hand as much as SS. Can't wait to see your project.

A way to avoid the spam is by having a private NG. You'd have to be invited and pass a screening to participate. Theoretically, that will do away with the spammers and trolls, for that matter. However, it being a private NG, and all, it would have it's own little problems.

OK, I've learned something about posting. It says that you can only post from your computer to a google group, not a Usenet group. Apparently, I'm on a Usenet group. Sigh. So...if anyone wants to see the necklace, email me at Beadseeker At aol.com and I'll send you a scan, ok?

Today I bought my own digital camera Now I have to get a memory card and learn to take good pictures. Am making a crystal necklace as a present and trying out felt and beaded flowers.

Have taken youngest son to the airport 35 ks away as he is back to Christchurch, holiday work and final year at Uni.I am also getting weeds out of the garden but the temp is soaring so will stay indoors and potter.

Cheers, Jan G

Becki, it's 2 in 3 up here. At least it seems to be. Drives me bonkers, cuz I can't sell anything! Fortunately, my family and friends are keeping me busy with custom stuff.

I hope to be getting back to some beading. Have done absolutely nothing lately, and am trying to pick out my next project. (Too much real life.) I did do a little chain maille as gifts, and I'm about to teach a couple of chain maille classes to teens.

I rarely use gold, and never seem to have gold filled crimps when I need them. However, lately I've been using silver crimps and then hitting them wiht one of the high quality metallic markers in gold. The markers are usually with the scrapbooking things and cost about $3.50 just for the one marker. (I only have the gold and silver)

It sounds goofy, but the crimps are usually in a place where they get little abrasion from wear or other beads on the item, and the paint from the marker doesn't come off. I have pieces that are a year old and more and haven't been treated kindly. yet the dot of marker on the crimp is the same as when I put it on the bracelet.

P.S. Getting a newsreader with a Kill file is a good way to retake the newsgroup. That way, you don't have to look at the postings from people who don't want to talk about beads, jewelry or subjects close to those things. I have a Mac, and the newsreader I use is called Hogwasher. It is shareware and cost me about $10 to register. I like it because it is full featured, is capable of handling mail and newsgroups and uses little disk space or memory. I am sure that there are equivalent news readers for people using Windows or Linux.

The other thing is that private newsgroups tend to have a limited life span. Everyone ends up knowing everything about the other members (or what the other members are willing to share), and then traffic dies off. Nobody's fault, really, but it gets very tired and people get busy with their off line lives. With a public newsgroup, people come and go, and participate as they are able. Traffic may wax and wane, but it never really goes away.

I like a combination of both public and private groups, and participating in both of them as I am able.

Just my $0.02,

I'm trying to fit back into my old life. It's not as bad as fitting back into old jeans but it does take a while to get your toes through everything and back to the floor.
