Cutover Box: Needs 220?

There was an after market kit available that would allow you to operate two of the EUs end to end and thus have 120/240 volt power. It involved connecting the synchronization wire at a different spot on one of the EUs then the manufacturer intended. You also had to open the bonding point on one of them and connect them to the load in a manor that reestablished the bonding for that set to the other end of it's winding. I don't remember who made the kit. If your furnace blower actually requires 240 volts to run I will confess that I hadn't seen that yet. Is it part of a unit that needs the 240 for something else like supplemental or emergency resistance heating.

If you can get by without the use of any 220v appliances here is a trick I use for powering our house during power outages. On the transfer switches' "generator" input connect the 120 volt hot lead to both hot leads on the generator side of the circuit. Now all 120 volt loads in the house will have power, but no 220 volt loads will. Turning on any of the 220 volt loads will not cause any problems other than they will not work as there are zero volts between the two hot leads. 120 volt loads can be added up to the capacity of the 120 volt generator.

If you have multi wire branch circuits in your home that technique can overload the neutral of such circuits. Since neutral conductors do not have over current protective devices that can kindle a fire. It is not the most likely ignition scenario I can think of but it is one that has happened.

Really? Tell me how. And please do cite that instance that you claim has happened. Oh, I know you're going to quote that crap about the neutral current being equal to the sum of the leg currents when fed like that but we all know that. Tell me, please, how a 5 or 10 KW portable generator feeding a panel with a 200 amp neutral is going to overload it. After all, 10KW at 120 volts is only 83 amps. Pete's little 2 KW rig can only feed about 17 amps. Maybe they tend toward the larger side of 17.....

Why are you railing about the service entry neutral when I specifically said "Multiwire Branch Circuits"? The specific instance I am aware of happened on a construction site. The general contractors trailer was supplied exactly as the OP described. The Multiwire Branch Circuit that served some of the outlets installed in what would have been the kitchen, if that unit had been used as a manufactured housing unit, failed due to electric heaters left on all night and the front end of the unit burned. A closed door and a rapid response by the Prince Georges County Fire Department to the installed automatic alarm system saved the approved prints and stored tools in the remaining portion of the trailer. The loss was limited to the break area, copier, and the tool batteries that were charging there. The neutral of the multi wire branch circuit was twelve gage. It was run in Non Metallic Sheathed Cable. The actual ampacity of number twelve American Wire Gage type TW wire in cable is twenty five amperes. With two 1800 watt heaters and ten tool chargers on the circuit the neutral conductor was carrying more than thirty amperes. During the day when the copier would have been on it would have been carrying forty amperes. The two ungrounded current carrying conductors of the circuit were protected by twenty ampere circuit breakers. Without the 240 volt power applied to the multi wire branch circuit the currents added and the neutral failed. The neutral took the ungrounded conductors with it and the resultant arcing ignited the stud to which the receptacle box was attached. Ignition occurred at the receptacle closest to the panel were one of the heaters was plugged in.

A similar failure without ignition occurred at a municipal gymnasium when an unqualified contractor hired by the city disarranged the Multi Wire Branch Circuit that served the high bay lighting for the gym floor. The lighting consisted of three rows of four lights with each set drawing 16 amperes from a three phase Multiwire Branch Circuit. The circuit was disarranged in the process of making room for a double pole breaker to feed a single phase sub panel in the gym office to supply electric heaters. With all three ungrounded conductors of the Multiwire Branch Circuit moved onto the same phase the neutral carried forty two amperes until it overheated and melted the insulation off of the ungrounded conductors. Since the circuit was run completely in Electro Metallic Tubing the resultant ground fault opened the branch circuit breakers. The neutral conductor and all of the phase conductors of the circuit had to be replaced up to the point were each row of lights was tapped off of the Multiwire Branch Circuit.
