Digitizing pictures

Can somebody help me. A friend has asked me to digitize a picture of her cat for embroidery. I have tried the Carol Price tutorial, but didn't find it too helpful for actual pictures. It in a jpg file.

What steps should I take for the best results in PE-Design or Origins.

The picture is a good close up picture, but there is still some background to it. Should I attempt to edit the background of the picture with photo editing software first or leave it in?

I did a quick run through of both PE-design and Origns. PE-design gave me a design with 65,000 stitches whereas Origins gave me a design with 10,000.

Any help would be appreciated. I am slowly figuring out this software and this group has been enormously helpful to me.

TIA, Amy

I have attempted work along similar lines and found that you can do one of two things. Since you have Origins (which is what I have) make sure you have the latest version (build 9381 from the Help_About menu). The have a fancy stitch option in the photo import section that may come up with something that looks good, or you could try the master stitch option, but they use a lot of thread. Or, you can edit your photo and look at applying a "cartoon", "watercolor", "pencil sketch" or similar filter to get the file looking good, but with a minium of color changes. Hope this helps.
