alt.binaries.craft.pictures may not be available on your server. I have the same problem here. I had emailed my server asking if that NG was available, but they haven't responded to me yet, so don't know if I'll get it. And you being with aol, maybe they won't carry that NG either. I'll look thru my files and see if I can find something, don't think I do though. is there a pic available online so that I may create it for you?

there is an "s" on craft. alt.binaries.crafts.pictures is the correct group name.

It's alt.binaries.crafts.pictures - the "s" is important :)

Does AOL's news server carry any binaries groups at all?

You're using AOL's newsserver - and I assume their newsreader as well. Neither is recommended, and there are lots of alternatives to both. (The news Server is where you get your newsgroups from; the news Reader is the program on your computer that you use to read and post messages to newsgroups).

Even though you connect to the internet with AOL, you can still use any other available software and services such as other browsers. What you can't do is connect to AOL's newsserver with any other software, or (I THINK) connect to any other newsserver with the AOL software.

Other newsreaders include Agent, NewsRover, NewsHound, and dozens of others. Even netscape communicator and Outlook Express can be used (but I wouldn't bother with Netscape)

There are premium newsservers that have a long retention (as long as a month) and don't miss messages. These include Easynews, Giganews, Supernews, and more. They run under US$10 a month. There are a couple of free ones, but you tend to get what you pay for.

Hi, Now that my keyboard is behaving again.... I can get the alt.binaries.crafts.pictures on AOL. Sign on go to Keyword and type Newsgroups go to Search All Newsgroups Type in alt.binaries.crafts.pictures. You should get a selection and if you click on it, you will get the option to join it.

I have used FreeAgent, but dropped it in favor of Netscape

7.1's newsreader which I found to be more versatile and easier to use. I don't use Outlook Express for anything (Outlook has no newsreader, oddly enough.) Also don't use Outlook or MSIE. Don't need viruses, Active X, or VBS scripts.

I also use Netscape for all basic messages (like this one) or for receiving or sending single attachments. But it's just about useless for multi-part attachments or for yEncoded postings. For those I use Agent.

I'm equally paranoid about OE and MSIE; but there is the occasional website that won't work properly with anything but IE (not surprisingly that includes some important Microsoft pages). You can manage which sites you allow to run scripts and ActiveX controls. I always say "no" first, then if the page still doesn't work I decide on a case-by-case basis whether it's worth the small risk.

I ONLY turn on Outlook Express to find an answer to someone else's OE problem.

Too true! Although I tend to avoid sending more than one attachment, after having folks with a dial up scream about the time they are tied up waiting for it to download. Posting on webspace and giving a url works for large files better than emailing them. However, I imagine you have things to email that you don't want to publish, even on a page not indexed. Technology is wonderful, isn't it?
