I have a quick question. My wife has a Viking Designer 1 machine which she's still trying to learn. She has a tiff and jpeg file of an image she'd like to get into vp3 format so that she can load it into 3D Embroidery Studio to put it onto some shirts.
Is it possible to do this conversion (some downloadable software or something like that)? I tried a quick google search, but nothing seemed to pop out at me.
Technically no, because it's not a conversion. Think of it in terms of software to convert a rough sketch into a finished house.
There are numerous programs called Digitizers. They range from completely manual (you essentially trace the image) to reasonably automatic. Either way, they require a good deal of effort to get a quality result. But sometimes the results are quite adequate with minimum effort. It depends on the type and quality of the image, the digitizing software chosen, and your own expectations.
The best results (and easiest to do) are obtained from simple (cartoon-like) images like clip-art. The most difficult would be photographs, with scanned images coming in a close second because of the preliminary clean-up work required.
Most embroidery machine companies offer digitizing software as part of their package, and there are a number of third-party offerings as well. The 3rd party programs include Embird, DraWings, Autodigitizing, Click n Stitch, Origins, and a host of others. Prices vary from a little over US$100 to more that US$10,000. Almost none will produce a result in .vp3 format - they will produce the format that can be used directly by the embroidery machine.
If you have an image you'd like digitized, you can post it in alt.binaries.crafts.pictures with a request, and someone will probably be happy to do it for you. You can help get a response by asking directly whether the image is suitable to be digitized, and if not, what needs to be done to the image.
If by "this program" you mean "3D Embroidery Studio", no, it doesn't. In the Pfaff/Viking product line, you'd need other members of the "3D Professional" package": either "3D Digitizing" or "3D Picture Stitch" (depending on the nature of the image).
Viking has always fragmented their software product line to the point of absurdity. But then, what can you expect from a company whose products, in INCREASING power, can be listed as the Designer II, 1 Plus, and Designer 1!?
I have a Viking 1+. I bought Click n Stitch. It is a great program for simple designs. I mostly use clip art or coloring book pictures. VERY easy to use and I have had good luck with it. Yahoo has a group you can join where lots of help is offered. Good Luck! Bette :)
