My Singer XL5000 required a USB-to-serial adapter, and I found lots using Google:

your requirement is really for USB-to-parallel:

Parallel/usb adapters are available. Belkin makes them, and I'm sure that others do too. If your Viking reader-writer has the dongle attached, it's possible that the dongle won't be readable via the usb port. If that's the case, you might have to go out and get a parallel port card that you install in a blank slot on the motherboard.

I'd suggest that you first do the most difficult thing: Try to contact Viking and ask them! (Contacting them ain't easy)

I know....I've tried *sigh*. yeah, the reader/writer has a dongle attached. And attaching a port card to the mother board is WAY beyond my expertise. Suggestions? Thanks

Thanks beverly, but I dont think it is a serial port....it looks bigger than a serial port...... thanks anyway~!

The second link I provided was for the result of a google searh for "USB-to-parallel adapter":

New software? (that was a joke)

Try a usb/parallel adapter - it MAY work - try to get it somewhere that has a good return policy. Don't know where you are or what's available locally - internet or mail orders are a pain if you have to return a small item.

If it DOES need a real parallel port, installing a card is really VERY easy if your computer has an available slot. It takes about 5 minutes

- 10 if you've never done it before. Just open the case, figure out where it goes (pretty obvious), remove the little metal plate (about

1" x 4") that covers the opening where you'll access the connector, and slide the card into the slot. It will fill the area where the metal plate was. And put back the screw that held the metal plate - it will now hold the card. Your OS will find the new hardware and you shouldn't have to do anything else.

PS - if you're doing any searches for either usb/parallel adapters OR a parallel port card, make sure you spell parallel right ;)

Yes, I did and thank you.....most everyone I talked to said they wont recognize the dongle....do you think it would be better (aka cheaper) to just buy another reader writer?....suggestions as to which? thanks again

there is what appears to be a little metal plate in the back that could possibly be a place for one...does the card come attached to that? Or do you have to take the shell off the puter....thats where I get panicky.......would just buying a new reader writer be cheaper/easier?....do you have a suggestion as to which? thanks again

John, if you'd see the set up on this thing you would cringe at the very thought of dismantling it and taking it anywhere LOL......it is truly a feat of engineering that amazes me everytime every peripheral works!!! thanks again tho

Have you changed your computer software from the one you used with your Viking? When I upgraded my computer I couldn't use the reader/writer with Win XP. My son split the HD and put Win 98 onto it, so I can use it. My machine is the Husqvana Rose, so pretty old.

I'm not an expert, but you may find a new reader/writer the easiest way all round, if the software has been changed.

Im afraid its not the software thats giving me the problem...the new computer didnt come with a parallel port, only usb's...the reader writer uses parallel ports...but thanks for the input

I understood your problem, but envisioned your fixing the port problem, only to find that it wouldn't work anyway, because of the software.

I also got a new copmputer last month and had the same problem. No printer port for the card writer. I do not think you can buy an adapter. Husqvarna/Viking wants to sell you a usb cardwriter instead... I took the comp back to the shop I got it from and had them install the parallel port. Even then I had to go into the device manager to change it to LPT 1 or LPT 2 as the default install is apparently LPT 3 and the card writer will not recognize anything but 1 or 2. it works fine now.

Hope this info is of some use. Good luck

Thanks, I was trying for something easy and inexpensive, I guess those

2 words and anything husqvarna can't be used in the same sentence. I think my solution for now is using my old laptop that runs windows 98...we were using it for a paperweight anyway;) Thanks for you help

Get a PCI Parallel Port card - install in a PCI slot .. and off ya go (had the same issue myself not long ago... I used an old pci card, that came with one of my scanners, years ago.

I am convinced is the one and the same GymmyBobb//JP Bengi, the evidence of posting history in the sister NG (ABCP) is just too much coincidence to not recognise the pattern. Add that to known posts in other NGs made before his DWEEBTV arse got slammed in Groups he decided to troll through., and you have a complete picture. This 'thread' has all the hallmarks, I am surprised yALL do not recognise them!! :-* Forgotten the "My laptop is busted" thread, the "My Grandson is dying" thread..what about the and efforts..all 'genuine' contributions, Herb?

Please accept my Laughter as _genuine_!!

The link below carries some interesting reading in consideration of how GymmyBob//Bengi operates, the similarities between GB and "Mr. Obo" being measures of very close parallels..and I am not simply pointing at the Spelling and Grammar :-~

#~Indications are that Advance Fee Fraud grosses hundreds of #millions of dollars annually and the losses are continuing to #escalate. In all likelihood, there are victims who do not #report their losses to authorities due to either fear #or embarrassment. As I see it, Herb, there is little difference between AFF and the trolling of "socially orientated" NGs in order to create a maladaptive ambience. Certainly the basic starter skills are identical: a belief the World owes them a financially challenged background a total noncomprehension of "standard English" I am torn between which is the lesser of the two evils (in UseNET Groups), the obsessed pariah or the obsessed egotistical Quixote types. Either one is often equally harmful to calming NG operational functions. Either one often demands kloo-bies be posted in response :-/

Your work (thread), Herb... and that of the others has been quite a giggle for GB, I would offer, particularly in light of the fact it _is_ a standard "HITB Syndrome"** type troll! Here is the framework of how to respond to such posts:

I am of the opinion _you_ are trolling this NG. The information you ask for can be discovered using your own time in following these approaches. Post your problem to: alt.comp.hardware.homebuilt

Now you tell me, Herb... someone who deals daily with medical paraphernalia, has raised a family of their own, has made access to NGs for over two years, operates a complex (?) sewing machine (and ALL that entails) ..has not got enough of a clue to type in "Where are parallel to USB connectors" or "Where are USB to parallel connectors" into _any_ SE??? C'mon Herb...gimme a break!
