I've had this happen occasionally when using pre-wound bobbins if there's not much thread left. Of course, if you're just starting out, you probably have a full bobbin. Some other things to check (I've done all of these incorrectly at one time or another): - is the bobbin in the right way and is the bobbin thread properly inserted into the tension 'groove' (don't know what it's called)?

- is the needle inserted correctly? If your machine can also do regular sewing, have you tried just sewing a seam to see if that will work properly? I'm sure others on the group will also have suggestions. Hope you can get it going, because this sure is a fun hobby!

I had similar problems and it drove me mad. I don't know which machine you have but I recommend the following:

  1. Changed to NEBS bobbins
  2. Cleaner the thread guides and bobbin area thoroughly for bits of fluff
  3. Used a good quality thread and threaded machine right
  4. Used a good needle (Schmetz or some use Janome blue tip and red tip for metallic)
  5. I have now obtained a new Q+ embroidery foot from Brother for my 3,000 machine. you can also put a spool cap on the thread to stop it jumping about. If you are new try and find a group for your machine, that's how I overcame my problems with the help of all the members. I had been sewing for years but the embroidery side was completely different to me - it's all about technique a bit like sex. Hope some of this helps Liz

I'm not real sure if I understand your problem, but another suggestion is to make sure you are threading the machine with the presser foot in the "UP" position. You can put it down when you thread the needle.
