Problem Installing & Running Bernina Plus 4 on my NEW PC with XP S2-Can anyone help me please? Thanks!

Hi! I have a Problem Installing & Running Bernina Plus 4 on my NEW PC with XP S2. Can anyone help me please? Thanks! I have contacted OESD Tech for support but after three weeks, they can't solve my problem. They implied that my NEW PC is USED and it is NOT, it is brand NEW! They suggest that I reformat my hard disk and I do NOT want to do such a radical procedure on a BRAND NEW PC. My PC is a HP Pavilion a1340n Pentium 640, 3.2 Ghz,1 GB RAM, 250 GB hard drive, Light Scribe DVD/CD drives, Multi-Card reader, USB 2 ports, Windows Media Center XP wirh S2 slipshipped on it. HP assured me that my PC is brand new. The OESD tech Michael thought that since the USER account set up on my new PC is called HP_Administrator rather than being called HP_Pavilion that this => that my PC is USED. It is NOT, plus the support manual has screen shots of the USER ID HP_Administrator, so I know that my NEW PC is NOT used but NEW, so I am very hesitant to follow his advice on reformatting my hard drive. He wanted to reformat it because he thought I have a Used PC. All of OESD Tech's solutions from both Mark & Michael have NOT solved my problem! Oh, by the way, my Explorations does NOT work on my new PC either. I've tried Compatability mode for Windows

2000 since the Manual for Bernina Plus 4 says it is for Windows 2000. The Box that the Bernina software came in says for XP, 2000, ME, etc.

All of my headaches strated when my old Sony PC, Pentium 4, 2 Ghz, 518 MB ram, 80 MB drive needed repair since the CD Roms & Dvds are NOT working properly. So, I bought a new PC the HP which I love. Now, the Bernina Plus 4 and the Explorations by OESD runs quite well on my Sony. So, if I can't find my problem, I can get the Sony repaired and continuue to run the Bernina & Explorations on the Sony which is Windows XP , only partial S2 installed.

Of course this means that I will need to put both PC's side by side and have two Monitors and keyboards to work on my PC. On the new HP, I will do everything such as email, art, use my Viking softwares and on the other PC run the Bernina stuff. Not exactly comfortable but it is so far my only solution.

I will discuss the Bernina Plus 4 and not worry about Explorations until I solve the Bernina problem. I have installed the dongle correctly, following all FAQs from OESD. Next, I install the Bernina software and this is where problems start. There have been so many re-installs and uninstalls that my head is spinning. OESD tried but couldn't solve my probllem.

My HP is running the XP S2 with Norton Internet Security. I disable Norton to Install Bernina. THe OCX files can't have permission to write to registry. OESD thought it was whether I had Administrator rights ( I have full administrator rights) but now I realize it must be that my Firewall is refuses the OCX's from writing to the registry. I have put the artista and all of these OCX's on the Exclusion list on the Firewall, so I have solved some of the problems of updating the OCX files to the registry. But, there is one OCX file (Active x) that is giving me problems and the error message says I need to re-install the Benrina again. The file is undldlg.ocx and I have Excluded it on my Firewall.

The last option is to UNINSTALL my firewall but if I do that, I will also want to unconnect my Cable Modem since I do NOT want to be open without a firewall with DSL service.

OESD wants me to UNINSTALL the Firewall and my Anti-Virus to try to solve this. Yet, as we all know, one can't be on a DSL service and NOT have protection. The Anti-Virus has detected 6 pesky virus attempts that were from emails (MIME) and preventes & deleted those virus's from getting on my system. Oh one email was from the domain OESD that had a pesky virus in the MIME. Maybe someone was using OESD's domain and maybe it was from a Spammer. I do NOT want to catch the Pesky virus or anyother Virus or any other secuurity risk on my PC.

Does anyone have any ideas please? Maybe Bernina Plus 4 can't work with XP S2?? Unfortunately my new PC has S2 slipshipped on it and I can't uninstall S2. I am open to getting rid of Norton and getting a new firewall such as Zone Alarm and a new Anti-Virus such as AVG. On my Sony where the Bernina worked, I had XP not full S2, ZoneAlarm and AVG. Oh, by the way, on my new PC, I have a Router hardware firewall. On my Sony, I had the router but I did NOT have the router when I originally installed the bernina.

Thanks in advance!

Get rid of norton, do a search for AVG, it is free and top of the line virus program. If you are running a router you donot need a firewall. the router is all you need. your system is fine. just dump norton and the firewall.........

The dongle driver that comes with the software does not work with SP2. Go to the bernina website, to the downloads or troubleshooting pages, can't remember which ... There is a new dongle driver that works with SP2 available for download there, and it does work.

I got a new PC about 2 months ago and had a devil of a time getting my artista software to work - eventually, my bernina dealer (who was away at the time) told me where to get the new driver etc and it worked like a charm.

Dear Granny & BrenLee, I already got the new dongle driver, still having problems. We re-installed the dongle with OESD support dozens of times. Now, after installing the bernina, the dongle won't update. Also, I guess that it is the firewall I will get rid of my Firewall. I plan to uninstall the dongle, the Bernina, etc, get rid of Norton and start from scratch with all of the steps. I believe that Norton has been blcoking the Active X files (OCX) and now since with suppoert I have been installing & uninstalling drivers & the Bernina so many times, that things are messed up. The Tech had me install in Safe Mode under to admin and had me install under my two user id profiles in XP. After messing around so much, I believe I better uninstall the Bernina, the tech had me re-install over an old install.

Thanks!

Either find someone who is knowledgeable in configuring Nortons on a XP machine [or] follow Nortons own advice in uninstalling it. Do not attempt to uninstall Nortons without following their advice. Email them, they will tell registered users "how to". There is clue Number 2 (two).

Find someone who knows what they are doing when setting a machine to XP (any version). So far (from what you have published) all your efforts (collectively) have accomplished is to screw over the HP factory install. There is clue Number 3 (three).

Of course I would volunteer, however I get the distinct feeling you know more than I (or many others) on configuring computers :-~

FWIW,,, "Tech" is a term too easily adopted these days. For example, GymmyBob//JPBengi//Granny will tell you

**_ he_** is a "Tech" :-/
