Removing stitches - Moustache trimmers

Has anyone tried using a moustache trimmer to remove design stitches when they've gone wrong? If so, how well have they worked? Somewhere some time ago I've heard it suggested that moustache trimmers are much less expensive than the stitch removers sold at various catalogs. Sharon

I bought a Wahl mustache trimmer (rechargeable, so I can use it without having it plugged in)

If you take a close look at the Wahl and Oster trimmers, and the ones sold for removing stitches, I believe that you will see that they are identical except for the color of the case. It seems that this was an instance of someone saying, "Hey, you know what this would be great for?" And then arranging to have a different color plastic housing made.

And adding about $37.96 to the cost "for esthetical improvement"... ;-)

Wahl mustache trimmer re-chargeable = $41.99

Peggy's Cordless Stitch Eraser 7 = $79.95

Well, you sure can see how much respect they have for crafters. In the Nancy's Notions catalog, Stitch Eraser is selling for $98.00. Thanks for your reply. Sharon

Nancy Zieman listed it in her spring sale catalog for $78 (I think). Got her newest catalog this week and she's asking $99 for it now. They don't understand the cost savings instinct of most home stitchers. Thanks for your input. Will compare prices on the Wahl at Walmart and Target tomorrow. Sharon

This is not uncommon. Notice the little scissors with the notch for cutting embroidery thread. Now go look at medical supply sites where they have scissors for removing sutures. There are other items which don't come to mind right now (senior moment?) but whenever contemplating a purchase of specialized items, be sure to check to see if they were not "borrowed" from another market.

That's exactly how I discovered the proper name of the little hook-tipped scissors I was given at the ER, after having some stitches removed. I found I loved them for clipping jump stitches, etc. and did a search. They are formally called "Littauer" scissors. I found them for under $5.00/pair.

I highly recommend the cordless re-chargeable ones, and I'm very happy with the Wahls, although I'm sure Oster makes them too.

JMHO,
