Seeking info about new thread

Loading thread data ...

I just received a flyer from a place where I have bought lots of thread in the past--all Madeira rayon--and they are starting to carry Coats rayon (Alcazar) and poly (Sylko) in 1100-yard spools, as opposed to the 5500-yard spools that they had previously carried. They're offering a pretty good deal right now, but before I go crazy on an order, I'm wondering whether anybody has has any experience with it, either pro or con. Any info would be appreciated!

I haven't tried the Coats thread, but I love ARC's polyester thread. It comes in 286 colors. Check out

They have a coupon for $0.40 off per spool when you order 10 or more.

I have a lot of Madeira rayon, and a lot of Sylko. I much prefer the Sylko. It doesn't lint, it doesn't break, and you can wash it, even with bleach. The color selection is great, and the price is, too.

Hi All,

I was hoping you could help me.

I purchased a new embroidery sewing machine almost a year ago and have never used it. Probably a little afraid of it but mostly because i haven't gotten any thread yet.

The embroidery designs I have call for Sulky decorative thread. After reading your posts for a month or so I see that rayon thread might not be what I want to use because it doesn't wash well.

I am writing because I was hoping you all could help me with selecting a good brand of thread and a source for the thread. I have seen suggestions here for sources but some of them sound like the manufacturer or a commercial source. I would like this information from the good people who use the thread.

That Coats and Clark polyester thread that has been mentioned here by a few of you sounds good but if I got something like that how do I get the correct colors in a different brand of thread. Is there a chart somewhere that gives the colors and the different brands and the stock number of each color thread in each brand?

Thanks for your help.

Lulu

Sorry for the invalid address but I am tired of spam. Thanks for understanding.

This is not addressed to you, Lulu.

To me, when the digitizer specifies colors, especially brand and number, it means that (1) this is what looked best to the digitizer, (2) the digitizer works for the company, or (3) these colors are what were on hand. There are other possibilities.

When I stitch out a design done by someone else, I look at my thread color choices, and pick what looks good to me.

The important part is to use the same _size_ thread. If the design was done in 40 wt., it is not going to look the same in 60, and if done in 30, might not stitch well. If I must go from, say 40 to 60, then I need to reset the density of the stitches.

Now, admittedly there have been times when I have gotten new colors of thread for a particular design or set of designs, but my point is that the colors are not set in stone. If you want a blue flower, and the design has a red flower, there is no law that says you have to make it red.

Opposing views welcomed.

Hi there,

If I was you I would not worry about what thread to use till you have had some time learning your machine I at the moment only have been using cotton thread ( do to the fact that it is most available thread for me) I will soon start looking into other threads but at the moment I have been doing t-shirts with the cotton thread and they look just fine to me. Once you have had time to learn you machine and found a design that you would like to use for something very special then that is when you can buy the really nice silky like threads for you project.

Good points though! Brings in other questions for me.

I don't have any thread at all. I am starting out fresh.

Being new at this makes me want to follow what is laid out until I know what I am doing.

This sounds like a stupid question to me!!!! Is 40 wt. rayon and 40 wt. polyester thread equal as far as the machine and designs go?

I think I prefer to start out with the colors called for. Just need to know how to match colors in different brands of thread? I don't have any thread at all and would like to tap into the wealth of info you people represent.

I have looked at the thread racks in the stores and there is a definite need for another source for thread. This brings me back to my question of how to match different brands of thread so I have the same color.

thanks, You have given me something to think about.
