washing t-shirt before monograming ?

I have been asked to monogram students t-shirts with their initials. In the pass I have washed or had person, wash their before t-shirts or sweatshirts before doing the monogramming . Is it truly necessary? I spoke with another person and was told it is not necessary. When I think about it, I am believing washing items may not be necessary. I would appreciate input with opinion/experience.

Necessary? No. Preferred on some items and fabrics, yes. I prefer it especially if the shirt is not new, but has been worn. I have done many this way, and I always tell the customer to make sure it is clean. This also removes excess dye and starches, finishes, etc. from new garments. A never-washed red silk shirt can really mess up a white emb design when it is finally washed and the color runs. Do what you think is best to insure your work is quality and you are happy with it.
