Twenty-six vendors from eleven states will show and sell their wares of ancient to modern beads, bead books, beading supplies, and finished beads, at the Elks Lodge - 276 N. An interesting mix of history and art, this bead extravaganza will feature over seventy tables representing the country's finest bead vendors. The fascination with beads is not a new one. People have been admiring, wearing, and praying with beads for over forty thousand years. According to Christopher England, the man behind Intergalactic Bead Shows, "Beads are not a passing fancy. In fact, in the many years we have been hosting bead shows, beads have only grown in popularity." When asked why he thought that was, England's reply was noncommittal. "Perhaps it is because of the satisfaction that comes from applying time and concentration to a small vial of beads to create a three-dimensional piece of jewelry or sculpture. Or, it could be the instant gratification found by stringing a collection of beads into something unique that you can wear that evening. Maybe it is the inspiration one gets from seeing other people's creativity come alive. Or, as one who has attended an Intergalactic Bead Show can tell you, it may simply be the experience of seeing so many colors, textures, and patterns together in one arena that lends itself to the bead frenzy. Attending our shows is like entering a room full of potential." Indeed, this weekend's Gulf States Intergalactic Bead Festival will be the premier place to harness the potential of antique and modern beads of every size, description, and material. The festival will also feature local bead artists and shops as listed below. Local glass lampwork bead artist Bob Rubanowice, Rubanowice's Glass Owl Studio, Tallahassee, FL, has been working with glass in its many dimensions for over thirty years. Not limited to just one medium, Rubanowice layers vibrant colors to transform stained glass, lampworked beads, fused glass, and quilts into the multi-dimensional landscape, seascape, and aquarium scenes he is most noted for. Each medium produces unique textures and results, and his talent for layering and blending color lends itself beautifully to the glass lampworked beads he will be displaying this weekend at the festival. He creates "clear-cased beads" by building up intricate layers of colored glass and coating them with clear glass, thus magnifying the image within. Intended to be the focal point in a handcrafted piece of jewelry, Bob's award-winning beads can take over an hour in torch time alone to create. Locals Kurt Valle and Samuel Mbullah, Pesani Trading Company, Tallahassee, FL will act as a welcome center for attendees this weekend. Pesani Trading Company, and their retail shop, Bead Station specialize in ethnic beads of all types, including Czech glass, Chinese lampwork beads, Bali silver, porcelain beads, and carved jade and carnelian pendants and beads. They carry amber beads, including some limited and rare pieces, and are pleased to be the exclusive source for jewelry grade PVC necklace rubber in fifteen colors. A fresh shipment has just arrived, so this weekend's show will include new items and surprises. Look to Pesani's tables for excellent prices and high quality beads and beading supplies. Glass Beadmaker Lea Zinke, Clearwater, FL, named The National Bead Society's 2003 "Beadmaker of the Year", will showcase her series of beads commemorating World Bead Day 2002. The series, titled "Our America", consists of three, three-dimensional glass beads, "Mountain Majesty", "Amber Waves" and "From Sea to Shining Sea", that embody the spirit of the country's most recognizable terrain. Zinke said of the design, she "wanted something to honor our country" and for the beads to capture the recent resurgence in patriotism. Known for her intricate floral designs, Zinke has been the recipient of many awards. She was the winner of Bead and Button magazine's "Bead Dreams 2001" competition in the handmade bead category and was a finalist in "Bead Dreams 2002", just to name a few. Her designs have been featured in several publications, including Beadwork and Bead and Button magazines. Glass bead making for the modern artist is the creative melding of Old-World knowledge with the artist's own unique eye for color, theme and design. As with any art form, once the technique is mastered the only limitations are in the mind of the creator. Among the noted participants this weekend will be the 2002 National Bead Society beadmaker of the year Patti Cahill, Dyed in the Fire, Mars Hill, NC. Cahill, a member of the World Beadmakers Guild (WBG), has spent years devoting herself to honing her craft. She utilizes her multitude of skills every time she creates a bead, and this vast experience combines with her modern eye to make her beads individual works of art. Each of her lampwork beads may require the attachment of a hundred dots or threads of molten glass to a core at temperatures exceeding 2,000 degrees. Visitors to this weekend's festival are sure to find something to delight them from the beads ranging from historical to modern, handcrafted to mass produced, natural materials to the newest in synthetic technology. Along with beads and bead-making supplies there will be numerous finished pieces to choose from, including beaded bracelets, pendants, necklaces, and earrings. The various artists, vendors, and collectors brought together by The Gulf States Intergalactic Bead Festival will be bringing Tallahassee the best selection of beads in the galaxy.
