Laburnum Ave. Richmond, VA 23222 From I-95 north of Richmond Exit 84 to I-295 south or I-95 south of Richmond Exit 46 I-295 north. All Exit 38 west on Meadowbridge Rd. 5 miles. 81 or 82. An interesting mix of history and art, this bead extravaganza will feature over eighty tables representing the country's finest bead vendors. The fascination with beads is not a new one. People have been admiring, wearing, and praying with beads for over forty thousand years. According to Christopher England, the man behind Intergalactic Bead Shows, "Beads are not a passing fancy. In fact, in the many years we have been hosting bead shows, beads have only grown in popularity." When asked why he thought that was, England's reply was noncommittal. "Perhaps it is because of the satisfaction that comes from applying time and concentration to a small vial of beads to create a three-dimensional piece of jewelry or sculpture. Or, it could be the instant gratification found by stringing a collection of beads into something unique that you can wear that evening. Maybe it is the inspiration one gets from seeing other people's creativity come alive. Or, as one who has attended an Intergalactic Bead Show can tell you, it may simply be the experience of seeing so many colors, textures, and patterns together in one arena that lends itself to the bead frenzy. Attending our shows is like entering a room full of potential." Indeed, this weekend's Old Dominion State Intergalactic Bead Festival will be the premier place to harness the potential of antique and modern beads of every size, description, and material. The festival will also feature bead artists and shops as listed below. Local artist Brad Pearson, Pearson Glass Studio, Richmond, VA will be displaying his beautiful assortment of glass lampworked beads this weekend. A glassblower for over ten years, Pearson began exclusively making beads because the process is much more earth friendly and economical than glass blowing. Working out of his home studio, Pearson creates beads that are "design oriented, with carefully placed swirls and dots". The colors he uses are brilliant and beautiful, and his finished beads resemble glass sunbursts. Pearson shares his expertise by offering beginning and intermediate classes to the public at a studio located in the historic Fan District of Richmond. Jim Goldstein and Lafaye Cobb, Beads & Rocks, Virginia Beach, VA will bring a variety of beads from their large warehouse and store. Their supply will include Czech, Indian, and Austrian beads, semi-precious gems, lead crystal from Egypt, and a tremendous selection of vintage beads - many still in their original packaging. Visit them early in the day, because Beads & Rocks carries beads you won't find at other shops. According to Lafaye, "our unique vintage and one-of-a-kind beads change with the shows and always sell out quickly". New from the studio, Beads & Rocks is introducing an original technique to the beading world - photo-resist beads. These beads are created by sandblasting a photo image onto the surface of fused glass, a skill that marries the virtually limitless possibilities of photography with the ancient craft of glass beadmaking. What a treat it will be for festival attendees to be able to rub elbows with the National Bead Society's Glass Beadmaker of the Year for 2004, Beth Olson, Olson Glass, Kissimmee, FL. Both Beth and her husband "Raybaby" specialize in murrine beads, which are glass beads that contain an intricate glass image inside. A murrine is made by first creating the inner image from a mosaic of glass and next stretching it into a cane. The cane is then sliced into individual images, which are incorporated into the finished beads. The Olson's' murrines usually contain a character or animal such as a panda bear, tiger, toucan, or flower. Glass sculptors for over 20 years, both Olson's worked for Disneyland in Tokyo, Japan making glass Disney characters, an experience that is evidenced by their amazing array of tiny sculpture-like beads in the shape of dragons, fairies and flowers. Attendees this weekend will be privileged to experience firsthand how Beth's beads are as delightful and unique as her personality. Studio Baboo, Charlottesville, VA, the largest full service bead store in the area, offers an extensive schedule of workshops and classes, as well as a full line of Czech and Japanese Miyuki seed beads, Delicas, semi-precious stones, glass beads, findings, tools, and a legendary selection of beading books. Terri Gable, owner, boasts that you will always find her staff to be "fun, friendly, and knowledgeable". She will bring a selection of tools, books, glass strands, Czech seed beads, and over two hundred colors of Delicas to Richmond this weekend, as well as being on hand to offer her expert advice on designing or finishing that special beaded jewelry piece. Knowing how important it is to stay up to date on the current trends, Gable puts forth great effort each season to travel to fashion and accessory trade shows and then to find and order the beads needed to make the jewelry. Her customers always appreciate her efforts to keep them on the cutting edge of their craft. Visitors to this weekend's festival are sure to find something to delight them from the beads ranging from historical to modern, handcrafted to mass produced, natural materials to the newest in synthetic technology. Along with beads and bead-making supplies there will be numerous finished pieces to choose from, including beaded bracelets, pendants, necklaces, and earrings. The various artists, vendors, and collectors brought together by The Old Dominion State Intergalactic Bead Festival will be bringing Richmond the best selection of beads in the galaxy. Let the creativity begin! ####### End #######
