Cutting Zinc Channel

Hi,

How do you cut the channels for frames? Do you use a hand saw or a table saw? I've used a hand saw, but am not thrilled! It's hard, and sometimes deforms the channel, and is difficult to be accurate. Also time consuming. I like making mitered corners because they look so much nicer. Can you use a table saw? What kind of blade do you need? Thanks for the help!

handsaw carefully.

a minichop saw with a very finely toothed blade would work too. you can find one of these at delphi, w-c, etc.

Gryphon makes a nice chop saw with an abrasive disc designed for such use. It ain't cheap. there is also a cheap 50$ mini chop saw made in china you may be able to find at glasscrafters or similar. I know of one glass worker that uses a dremel with cut-off wheels.m

I suppose it all depends on how much you are going to be cutting zinc. You are right that cutting with a hacksaw is a pain, and frankly, there's no good blade for a "woodworker's" table saw that I've found. I do have a woodworking bandsaw and I have cut zinc with that. You can buy a $30 chop saw from

and put a thin abrasive wheel on it and do a bang-up job of cutting zinc/brass. Don't force the blade/wheel and take your time.

I've been using the Gryphon also for as long as it's been around. I dumped the fiber blade and went to a tool store and bought a DeWalt 5

1/2" carbide thin blade for metals. Had the hole bored out to fit on the Gryphon. Now, it cuts like butter and I haven't had the blade sharpen in over two years and I use a lot of zinc.

How does that work on brass? Does it have enough guts to go thru brass without "hanging"?

Oh yeah, no problem. The blade will cost ya maybe $25, maybe more but well worth it. I even cut brass and zinc rebar with it.
