Glass panels in wrought iron frames

I have a nice source for wrought iron items with black powdercoat finish, all of which are for installing leaded panels. So I make the panels and they fit fairly nicely in the openings but how to secure them? My first thought was that you could solder them in but I can't seem to get the solder to bond to the iron even with LOTS of heat. I wound up damaging some of the lead borders but it will be ok because they will be hidden by the wrought iron. I decided that glass putty is the way to go but I wanted to query this forum in case someone has a good experience with this kind of thing to report?

Thnaks all!

I use silicon.

The traditional way is a small hole drilled into the metal where a paperclip like thingie holds the glass securely, then putty.
