Leaded Enamel powders...need help...dump or keep?

Hi to all from Oz

A few years back I was given a stack of old leaded enamel powders in 4 pound bags from a closed down signmaking company and its been sitting in my garage ever since. I stored most of the nice colors reds blues greens etc in large airtight coffee jars and must admit the colors are very striking and look nice but there is still a few lying around in the paper bags and I believe this can be pretty hazardous to ones health.

Have just been googling enamel powder and came across a few websites selling this stuff for near the price of gold.

I want to be rid of this stuff having kids around the place but now I'm thinking it might be worth something.

So...should I dump it ? or should try to flog it off somewhere?

Any help is much appreciated

The lead is only hazardous if ingested. As long as you don't get any in your mouth, or go "snorting" the powder, you should be just fine.

Were it mine and I had no use for it, I'd probably divide the enamel into smaller portions (several ounces each) using Zip-Loc bags and put them on eBay.

I'd do the division into smaller bags outside with the wind at my back and wear a dust mask.

Since you got these from a sign making company, they are presumably compatible with metal, not glass, and probably with steel, not copper. If put on the wrong material, they will crack or pop off on cooling. As long as you make that clear, people may want to buy them without later hunting you down.

Thanks for the replies, Moonraker, I might try that. What category do you think would be suitable on ebay for this? I have done ebay searches for enamel powder and I get a million hits on jewellery items but very little in the craft area.

Actually if enough people are interested i'd rather offer it cheaply as a group buy or something?, photo's and brand manufacture can be provided.

And sorry if these emails sound like spam, I am a craftperson (lostwax and jewellery casting) Just never got around to experimenting with enamels.

Cheers.

Leaded enamels are no longer available (i.e. produced) in the united states... These are, as Mike said, most likely for enameling metal. Are they marked in any way? Color numbers? manufacturer?

If you want to sell them in bulk - you might advertise them on the "Glass on Metal" classifieds. ....where people who are into enameling would probably grab them up...

have to "register" to become a member - but I do not believe thereis any other cost .

also - you just might want to read the "enamels" wanted - and contact the people listed who are looking for them!

Hi Again to all.

The enamel in question is made by Blythe, I have powder and lump form in many different colors...I believe this is very hard to find these days.

Can someone please inform me on the different grades of enamel what are A B and C? I'm guess C is for fine powder form and A is for the lumpy version?

Anyway If there is enough people interested here I will post in 1 pound lots made up of 4 x 2 ounce bags, in colors of your choice

I can post pictures of colors available and will sell at 25% off the Thompson website going rate for different grades.

Air freight (5-7 days) to anywhere in the US for $10 and will combine post for larger orders.

Regards sean

please email below if interested
