what's so special about high temp wire for fusing?

Hi, youse!

Can anyone tell me what type of wire is used for this fusing work? I know it's mainly high temp silver wire (at least, I think it is..correct me if I'm wrong) I'm looking to identify a HT wire for fusing, something that doesn't discolour, or melt. And I'm looking for scientists... :-) .. No, seriously, I'm looking for time tested result driven results.

Did I just say that? ;-)

Anyone help? Copper wire is just no good any longer..

Tks

To fuse into the glass for a hanging loop, stainless steel tie wire works for me.

There's nichrome which is a sort of grayish color.

"fine silver" (.995 silver instead of the .925 purity which is sterling) doesn't discolor, but it might be too soft for your purposes.

Works for jewelry though. :-)

Most commonly it is nichrome heating wire, which has a coefficient of expansion such that it does not break the glass and stays in. It usually stays a silver color at fusing temps. I have used it or thin Kanthol A1 for a number of fused hanging thingys. Stainless may work, although stainless can contract enough to pull out.

Nancy Tang of Glass Orchids sells high temp wire which doesn't discolor its silver color in the fusing process. Try
