Completely, utterly OT but you guys are smart (and devious) and can help!

OK - I've posted this on my GS boards too, so if any of you read them, you may have seen this ...

I am trying to work on ideas for our spring Destination: Unknown campout. The theme is loosely based on Amazing Race (although I'm thinking Amazing RaceS. . . )

I've come up with some ideas and I'm bouncing them off you to see what you think/can help with/tweak:

Each team (5-7 girls each) will have to carry a bag of "necessities" with them - a toothbrush, "cell phone", money. Possibly allow them to "buy" some stuff so they can have things to meet challenges more easily later. Other ideas to include?

Each station will be named for a WAGGGS [World Assoc. of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides) country.

Egypt: An archaeological dig. Decorate some ceramic flowerpots, then break into several pieces. Put into a sand pit or similar and they have to "excavate" them and put them together. Only one will be actually whole. Have a coded message on the pot they need to figure out for bonus points.

Iceland: Dogsledding - girls tied together like a dog team and must pull something across a course. Need to elect a "musher" to be effective, but don't tell them that - let them figure it out. [Note: according to at least one website, yes, they DO dogsled in Iceland!)

India: Elephant walk - girls bend over, reach between their legs, grab had of girl behind them - again, finish an obstacle course holding hands. If one drops, they have to go back some distance.

Cook Islands: Girls need to get their entire team on a 2'x2' board and stand together with one foot in the air for at least 10 seconds.

I want to do a night hunt - I haven't figured out which country (other than AK in the US) has the longest nights in winter. Answers appreciated so I don't have to go look LOL!

In order to proceed to the next station, you need to buy transportation. AFter you buy it, you do something (spin a spinner, throw a dart, draw a card?) that tells you how successful it was. For example, you might buy plane tickets, then draw "mechanical failure causes delays." The "delays" cost you points; smooth sailing (pardon the pun) gives you points.

This is a start. There will be more. I want to do something like a baseball toss (Japan?), shelter buiding, etc. (ideas welcome!).

I would like to have some kind of "chance" cards that could help teams gain points by doing a special challenge, or hurt them by costing them points/money. We have a group of girls who vary in fitness, but only one or two are REALLY fit. I thought this might help "even out" some of the physical discrepancies. But this is where I'm really stuck and need ideas!

All help and ideas appreciated!

Finland, Sweden, Norway, Russia, Canada - take your pick. All have territory above the arctic circle, with Canade and Greenland being the farthest north.

Baseball toss could also be Cuba or Dominican Republic. That way you could do an origami fold for Japan. For shelter, perhaps Israel - I'm thinking the Jewish holiday of Sukkot which involves building and inhabiting temporary shelter.

This sounds really cool, Linda!

For something totally different try Shetland. At 60N it may not have the longest night (that's probably Iceland, Greenland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, USSR, etc) but it's obscure enough to challenge the competitors!

Oy, Bruce, there hasn't been a USSR for more than 15 years!

Some Head cover [ preferablly a head scarf that can be used also for first aid] , A water bottle , a carot or an apple for each girl, First Aid, Toilet paper, a medium sized rope, matches, a flash light.

you could use some cottons stripes write on them , cut them up and bury themm in sand, or use some fake parchment paper , torn up , same effect less chance of cutting hands,,,,

If the girls visit a foreign nation, how about a sheet/book of phrases or words?

A compass

first aid and mending kits

extra socks -- I've been told by hikers that taking care of one's feet is very, very important. Socks could also be used as hand protectors if there are messy things that need to be picked up.

Iceland is not even close, it is all south of the arctic circle. The longest nights there are only a little longer than in the Shetlands.
