Leave it to me to ask a question without considering obvious variables. Even so, you gave me enough information to get the rough estimate I'm needing. Thank you Karen!!!

I thought you would have something up your sleeve in this regard. Thank you for the reply.

I remember, many years ago now, a post of yours that talked about the neatness of a stitch being dependent on the direction the thread was pulled after a stitch was made. This was something I had not considered and began going over some of my work with a magnifying glass. I am a much better stitcher now and my work shows it. So, belatedly, thank you for that also!!!

I use the loop start, and haven't found any signifigant difference in length while using the English or Danish method.

To cut the amound of thread for my stitches I use this formula: (number of stitches times 1.5) + 10 cm for the tail. I use maximum two times the length of my arm.

For the whold skein: My arm is 65 cm, so two times that is 130 cm. Minus 10 for the tail leaves 120 cm, which divided with 1,5 cm/stitch is 80 stitches.

So 130 divided into 8 meters is 6,1, that times 80 makes app. 488 stitches more or less.

This is for 14 count aida, so you might experiment to see the diffence in other count and type of fabric. As for the origin of the Danish method, if I find out I will post it. Being Danish myself I am curious...

Just in case anyone is looking for Darlene's book, it is "The Proper Stitch" not "The Perfect Stitch." There's someone in my guild who makes this same mistake every time she tries to refer to this book.

Forgot to add, 488 stitches is for one strand of floss. A skein of course has 6 strands, so 488 times 6 is 2928 stitches (I KNEW I was missing something when I read Karen's result, hehe)

Ah, yes, I did get the terms confused! every time i see a ladder i think of railroad ties and when i see railroad ties i think of horizontal ladders taking you from where you are to some place else! thanks for clarifying

Sorry Donna:

You quite correct. Considering that I have a copy of it in my library, you'd think I would at least get the title correct. Sigh.

Giving myself thirty lashes of a wet noodle.
