For the knitters in the group: Help with hats and smaller projects done on DPNs

Hi all.. Been quite some time since I have written.. I am having a little difficulty with the use of DPNs.. Generally I don't have a problem but my hat's brims are coming out a little too lose. Need some suggestions as to whether if I need to change to a smaller needle for the brim or use a needle that will work for the whole hat since I do knit lose anyway. Also, I am doing small projects like baby mitts. the pattern I have calls for a size 5 needle and is still a little big.. If anyone can help, and can email me off list, I will give you the pattern.. I can't recall where I got it from but I do need some help with these suggestions you may have.

Before starting any pattern , one must make a swatch to measure if the GUAGUE one knits in , fits the one that the maker of the pattern had, Guagues are very individual. if yoy brim comes out too loose you can calculate and decrease some stitches all around , going over to thinner needles also helps . mirjam

Smaller needles and maybe switch (if you're using metal) to bamboo dpns. They seem to hold the stitch a little snugger.

Before I toss my needles and say forget it, I need to ask a question again.. I am starting a new hat again and wondered do I measure started at the crown before putting the brim? Or after??? Help please.. I am willing to really get this, but its really making me split hairs here.. Portia

Before any knitted project, and even though knitting is quite stretchy, one should have the measurements and compare them with the gaugue, even if you hate it !!! it saves time and heart pains later!!!, than when you start the knitting ,, after some rows measure again to see if it kept the gaugue while doing the larger knitting !!! If you started the hat at the middle of the Head anf knit down wards , you probably widened the hat so it does Fit the brim ,,,once you got to `under the ears `,,,,,you might want to change your needles and maybe decrease the number of st. MEASURE , it is hard to know from reading it mirjam

Oh BTW, Is there an average size needle for hats? Or, does it depend on the size of the head? I knit for charities and want to make hats for preemie and newborn babies as well as adults and children. I also have a chart and if I use the chart for the head size, how would one be able to work a hat from the crown down.. I don't particularily like sewing either.. But, if I do it from the brim up, I can just still follow the same way by using smaller needles for the brim and larger size needles that the pattern calls for? I have a couple of patterns.. Just don't want to give up yet. Thanks for any help.. Portia, Southern California

Why don't you join Ravelry and look for groups in your area that meet in person? I'm sure they would love to help you. It is much easier to help someone if you can actually see what they are working on.

If you want to skip getting gauge on your projects, then you are probably in for much disappointment!

Needle sizes are connected to the thickness of the wool/thread you use + the way you knit =3Dloose or tight. it has nothing to do with the item you knit.

Size of head is important to the size you will NEED to knit , Nothing to do with needle sizes!!!!

Find a good pattern for that , and ask in the shop where they sell wools which are suitable !!!! Every wool ball has instructions on it about suggested needle sizes , when buying a new wool , TRY and Swatch it first to see if your Guague Fits the one they suggest , if not calculate and adjust it !!!!!

If you have a chart ? wasn't connected to a pattern? when starting any hat from the top , one starts with 4 st , [at this stage you can use plastic tooth picks] close into a round knit one more round and k1 make 1 into every st [you now have 8 ] put a colored marker to know where you start , knit another round , now take your intended DP needle [the one that you guagued well with ] k1 make 1 into every st , knit another round, [you have 16 st . next round k1, k1+make 1, K1 , k1+make 1 , till end of round you have now 24 st , knit round ,,, go on like this increasing st every time with a growing number of just k st between the increases until you have the number of st you need for the crown , now go on knitting until you have half the length from under ear to under ear , now knit the brim , if you add straps you can do it now , finish loosely , using a Bigger sized needle for knitting the cast off st .

?. I don't particularily like

That is why one knits it in the round . >But, if I do it from the brim up, thus start with the brim an decrease where i wrote increase !!!!

yes you can

Do not give up one can do ANYTHING with knitting !!!! mirjam
