Help Needed . . . Knitting

That sounds wonderful. I think people would hate me if I knitted baby sweaters out of the yarn I've been using for scarves, though. *giggle* It's definitely not easily washed!

Good thinking--But if you ever want to do such a fun thing, just ask the agencies and they might donate something. Most likely what they would donate would be acrylics because the kind of stuff you're probably using would be too expensive.

What I like to do with my odds and ends is to knit or crochet squares for the Warm Up America project. The Michaels I go to puts a basket in their store in the Fall and you can just toss in any square in any color. Volunteers come in before Christmas and sew the squares together into afghans for charity.

A local fabric store here does something similar in that they make quilts with the help of volunteers. Ruby

Oxfam likes (they even provide a little pattern) knitted t shirts for children (it's gets numbingly cold in desert regions at night) and large rectangles for women which they use for warmth, for carrying and many other purposes.

Here are the basic instructions for a woolen tshirt for kids that Oxfam is only too happy to receive and will send it where it is needed.

A Baby vest [sleeveless ] can be made from 2

25 cm X 25 [for a 6-12 months old ] [or you might decide on 30 cm X 30 cm for a what waider and bigger baby. ] knitted squares. put squares on each other front on front or backside to back side [depends on the way you sew your knits] . sew 15 cm both under sides. now sew one shoulder 8 cm [ or in bigger size 10 cm] , on the other side make 3 loops and sew three buttons. mirjam

I have a friend who does those little tee-shirts - you can really have fun with them. I do wish I could still knit - even just to do those. It`s so relaxing and I have literally dozens of cones of 4ply tucked away up in my hobbies room up in the roof.

Dianne, you are a very experienced craftsperson/artisan, with lots of patience. Maybe you should consider getting the pattern you really want and the heck with what the shop owner had to say.

I've only recently started knitting again after a long hiatus - thanks to Elizabeth (IIRC) for sending me in the direction of

!! However, when I did knit, years ago, I never found lace or cables to be a problem. ONce you follow the directions a little way along you can see the patterns start to develop and, just as "seeing" the holes in linen makes it easier to stitch, so too does seeing the patterns.

My problem's usually been with sizing and finishing, but that's another story.

I say that every night as I do this pattern. Now that I understand it, it's going quickly. Well, no. It's not going quickly, because I don't like it. :-)

Ooooh. You are an enabler! I loved that lacy knit jacket.

I can do the lace and cables readily enough. Unless I miss a stitch. I usually find I forget to yarn over. And I have to re-write the directions so that the rhythm makes sense to me. But I can do them and have done several lace and cable patterns.

It was just the darned "short rows" that was confusing me, and the way the directions had 2 rows in one sentence. :-)

I'm not enjoying this knitting experience at all. Also, because it's No. 8 needles (large and heavy). Because I don't throw but rather drop and wrap, the extra weight is slowing down progress. I was thinking of a circular needle, but I just simply don't like this darn shawl.

I have a lot invested in the yarn. Would multi-colored yarn work with a lace pattern, do you think?

Margaret Stove laceweight yarns come in multi-colors with a lace scarf pattern. I've tried several times to knit mine up and it keeps returning to ball form because I miss-count, but I think that the color gradations are nice in the lace. Why don't you swatch up a bit and see? There are plenty of free lace patterns available online that you could play with.
