HOW-TO-embellished cross stitch

I have seen embellished kits or as I would call them, stamped patterns, of some beautiful designs. I need to know how these projects are stitched. I have never even tried to work on one as I usually just start from scratch from a chart. Are certain areas highlighted or is the whole picture cross stitched? If all is stitched, does the kit give the thread numbers relative to the color? Thanks Claire

As Brenda said, there is a great variety out there. I have down one where the background was printed, and figures and objects added in cross stitch. It didn't work too badly, although it required a bit of adjustment on placements of some elements. I have done a small one of a fairy at the request of a friend where the entire picture was printed, and the stitching involved adding some decorative bits with metallic threads and blending filament. It was a bit awful to do as the fabric was very plasticy, but didn't look bad when done. I have another somewhere in the UFO stack where there are, as Brenda described it, blobs to be filled in--again, if you are not intimidated by changing as you go, it is quite workable. It will have ribbon embroidery added, which should cover up a multitude of sins!! I would check the fabric if you can to avoid flimsy polyester or printing that gobs up the holes. Dawne
