Life Imitates Art......

I suddenly realized how the colors of my newly renovated house & new additions remind me of what I wear! Also recall some interior designer saying to look into one's closet to help decide what colors to choose to paint one's home.

We signed the building contract on my birthday in early April then I spent the next 30 days packing and moving literally a ton of stuff into storage......a lot of the weight being boxes of books & paper. On the positive side, I lost 10 lbs packing all those boxes!

They started digging the foundation for the new additions in late May and this afternoon, they told me we're about 2-3 weeks from completion!!!

Today they completed installing all the new flooring in the downstairs painting studio, kitchen and dining room.....the floors were done with a hand hewn black oak floor......goes with the new granite countertops, a very deep charcoal with bluish tinted mica chips known as Blue Pearl.

I asked for the walls & trim to be painted in brilliant white......at some point, I plan to paint other colors but not sure what yet as I like too many colors to decide on right now.......so think the best thing to do is to live and use the rooms to see how the sunlight reflects in each room.......also, fall winter light is a lot brighter since we face south in front and north in back which is perfect for my new painting studio.......going back to the light conditions, the house gets less light in the spring summer, partially to do with leafy trees and the seasonal sun shift.

Some of the colors I'd like to play with are shades in the melon family, such as cantalope with a touch of chartreuse.......also love saffron, burnt oranges, pumpkin, yellows, from amber to sweet butter yellow!.....also love hot pink, periwinkle.......no matter the main colors, have to add small bits of greens & blues to blend all together

Going back to the house......the new kitchen cabinets have a bluish white glaze on "white" maple......wood "color" is overall ecru with a tint of almond thrown in......I actually wanted white cabinets but unable to get white wood as they only offered white in a laminate.

I chose off white ceramic tiles in the front entry, hallway & powder room.....the new mudroom has a pattern of deep charcoal & white tiles just like the floors seen in Old Master Dutch paintings.

This afternoon, they completed installing ceramic tile in the master bath.......white tiles with a random pattern of "Woolydream Blue" (ultramarine) of iridescent glass tile placed into the center of four white tiles here and there...this glass tile looks similar to Tiffany stained glass....this beautiful blue glass tile was also added as a border near the top of the tiled shower......the tile man said the small amount of glass tiles cost more than alll the other tiles in the masterbath! Which is the reason why we could only afford the blue glass as "accents" not as a major part of my bathroom decor! I was very happy to get this little bit as I love ultramarine blue, known as my signature color as it's featured in much of my artwork & designs.

Overall, the downstairs is mostly black & white similar to what I wear........I love to spike up basic black & white with colors..........my painting studio is all white with the new black flooring.

In all the work areas, studios, offices, kitchen, bathrooms, I have natural daylight flourescent lights......recessed lighting included. Lamps will add warm accent lighting using GE Reveal bulbs.......I can work in every room of the house without color distortions.

In the huge upstairs studio with cathedral ceilings, I'm keeping the walls brilliant white........the floors are warm honey wood planks........my Amish quilts, collection of fabrics and other fun collections will add a lot of colors in all rooms.

Later, we plan to re-do the three bedrooms with bamboo flooring......wonderful warm colors, very smooth.......amazing how much the price went down in just a few months after we contracted to build the house.......I'd have chosen bamboo flooring but the prices were too high at the time.

In back of the the big studio is a small "garden room" I had this "room" built, separated from the studio area by glass paned French doors........this little room will be my private / office space......plan to move in my tall secretary desk, shelves and so on......for once in my life I'm goin gto have my own space to read, write, to do whatever I please!

Eventually,I'd like to literally make this room into a garden room with the use of a pretty flowery wallpaper on top with white beadboard on the bottom separated by a chair rail. Will see....or else, I could do a Morroccan fantasy with a palette of spice colors.....

Best thing is I'm going to have room for just about everything and be able to work without having to search for things.......without books and papers falling all over, etc. Oh yes, Roger aka Mr Wooly gets to move into my "old" studio........

OMG, could you imagine me living in a house where the walls are all painted DMC 995?

Love the color on me. Not sure I'd love it as much as walls and couches.

Oh dear - I don`t think that mainly black and red would be a good idea to paint rooms!

Brenda,

I actually have two "extra" bedrooms......these may come in handy for whenever I MIGHT teach classes on creating art.......I've had this idea for several years but it's going to take a great deal of thought and planning for someday.....

Yes,you're so right about how fresh and crisp a blue & white bathroom looks and feels! Our main bathroom is also blue & white with a fish motif. I've "decorated" this room with a white shower curtain featuring a contemporary blue & white fish print and in the corner of the sink vanity, I placed two wonderfully detailed, painted Chinese ceramic fish.

Recently, I found a painted wooden fish sign in a folk art style that'll add a charming touch to the room. One more thing I'd like is to either paint or embroider a pic of something "fishy"!

Roger has been taking construction pics for his record book......I hadn't thought about posting pics but that's a good idea especially when I set up the studios or workrooms.

A good portion of my wardrobe is black but I do like a jolt of bright color now and then to perk things up.........so how about orange and black with a dash of yellow and lime??!

I very recently bought a linen blouse in a shade of "pumpkin" looks great with black or blue jeans........I'm kidding you just a little but I do have quite a large collection of Halloween things......such as black cat couples, pumpkin couples, many ceramics and so on......many of the pieces are vintage style, very charming and fun.......also have a black Halloween "tree" that I leave up all year in my studio so I can admire & be inspired by the colorful & amusing Halloween ornaments.

Martha Stewart featured an article in her mag a year or so ago on using black as an interior color scheme.......but don't think black was a main wall color, more as color accents and trim with lots of black painted furniture & fabric prints. However, I wouldn't mind having a wall painted in black and may do so yet.......be perfect to set off some of my colorful collections of things and quilts.

In fact, since the cost of putting in white shutters all at once on ALL

24 new windows is almost cost prohibitive right now, I plan to sew shirred panels to be fitted inside the window casements using black & white prints lined in white.......was hoping to find a print with a dash of red and black on white. The first piece of new furniture we just bought is an armchair in red leather! Looks great on the black oak floor!

Coincidentally.....the painters are here right now prepping the hallway walls that'll be painted in brilliant white tomorrow!

Note to self: Send Lula one of those gag singing fish plaques. :-)

I'll enjoy the pictures when you have time. I know how that goes. I have about 400 pictures > Brenda,

If my memory is right since I don't have a color chart in front of me......DMC 995 is the deeper turquoise?

If so......then a dose of turquoise looks wonderful in many color schemes.....think of Miami......Mexico, Tibet......think of beautiful Islamic tile work, ceramics, the Aegean.....many shades of turquoise in this world to live with!

Turquoise looks great paired with pinks, purples, chartreuse and many other colors.....can be very sophisticated to primitive color schemes.

I'm glad you mentioned this......getting lots of inspiration!

More like Electric Blue. Would look good in a truly modern look with either stark white walls, or dramatically dark walls on a slipper style couch with stainless steel legs and lots of glass (table tops and such). Wall colour, not so much. Traditional styling, not so much.

Though, we have new guys at work who has some really funky shirts. One that surprises me how well it works is dark grey-brown, with lighter shades of the same circle outlines on the dark background. Then there are open circles machine embroidered over it in exactly that colour. It accents the brown wonderfully.

Nyssa.....

Before all this construction and renovation, my house was known as "Lula's Warehouse" and if the AC got shut down unexpectedly on a typical MD summer day, it also feels like a swamp!

Quite a few times during construction we had to do without AC on hot humid days.....but guess it's better than going through construction in the winter as my neighbor did......they had to move out for awhile as the house became too cold to live in.

Bottomline, I wasted so many hours searching for everything often losing my train of thought and the worse part. losing all my INSPIRATION!! So, thank you for your good wishes.......I expect to be much more productive, most especially being MORE creative.......I'm looking forward to coming up with many new artworks!

Yikes! Hahaha, you're not kidding about this being a gag gift! That fish would make me gag!

Your note gave me a good laugh! I can't imagine why anyone would want such a critter in their home but I shouldn't be judgemental as I'm sure someone would probably wonder why I collect the things I do!

But..... that is one ugly fish!!.....I saw my first "singing fish plaque" in one of those Kaybee Toy stores only two weeks ago because my seven year old nephew wanted to see that scarey looking critter up close........fortunately the model on display didn't have any batteries. Even with deep discounts, the piles of boxed fish for sale was quite high!

It's the kind of gift a young nephew would give the uncle who takes him fishing. My dad has one of these. I wonder if there isn't much variety in them since he received a rainbow trout but he normally goes for catfish.

Richard bought one of those last time we were on Dartmoor. He still has it, although it`s been designated to the basement, where it still makes everyone jump as they go by!!!

We bought him a "Crazy Frog" keyring last Christmas - I don`t know if you know that one, but it`s LOUD! Having driven them nuts at the Police Station with it, it was passed on to a nephew, whose mother has been cursing him (Richard) ever since!!!

Dear Mirjam,

I'm so glad you enjoyed my "light" topics.......you have gone through a very harrowing time with attacking missles so am glad you are now having some peace & quiet to sit back and enjoy what you can!

I think I can truly tell you about one worse than the singing bass! At the truck stop where I'm working now, we have a moose dressed in hunting gear (ah gads, THAT topic again!) who, when his paw is squeezed plays a male voice singing Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot". Trust me when I say, "somehow" his batteries disappeared and mysteriously enough, everytime someone puts new batteries in, those disappear as well. I won't name any names, but I suspect her initials just MIGHT include Tegan somewhere in them... LOL
