Michael's Needlework section

I was in my Michael's this weekend looking for some floss and saw they were clearing even MORE out of the needlework section - so I asked what's up? They are downsizing it - sounds like it's going to ultimately be one short aisle with everything - floss, hoops, needles and kits. Not that what they have is all that great, but at least it's something.

Ironically, I am seeing more interest in needlework, particularly easy surface work, in many of the indie blogs.

Thank goodness for the internet!

Speak for yourself. I just dropped a ton of money on a British website.

Didn't sound nearly as bad when the total was in pounds, but then I made the mistake of using Yahoo Currency Converter. (Take a deep breath, Self; it's not allllllll that ridiculous for that many kits.)

carry it anymore and I wondered how long ago they stopped selling it. I have a large collection and don't buy it very often but now I always have to make a special trip to get it.

Oh, gee, I think it was over a year ago when we were discussing how they aren't selling it anymore, so it's been at least that long.

Now I see someone has mentioned that Michaels is downsizing. I certainly *hope* they at least keep the floss!!!!

Keep in mind that a lot of quilt stores are now stocking embroidery supplies, especially in areas without an LNS or craft store that carries DMC. Some also have some hand-dyed threads as well. It's worth checking out if there is a LQS in your area, but no LNS...

I think the "down sizing" varies from store to store. My tiny store is the same one aisle of charts and kits and one of "supplies" including floss, needles and such. There used to be a fair bit of Mill Hill beads and Krenik, but that is dwindling.

Did any one else get the 25% discount coupon from DMC for Michael's?

They got rid of the beads and Kreinik here about two years ago. When I went in this weekend, some of the DMC specialities were gone - I belive light effects and linen. Also downsizing even further the perle.

Our quilt shops don't carry any embroidery stuff.

Canadian Wal-marts carry Anchor floss pre-wound on bobbins, but they have drastically reduced their general craft supplies in favour of scrapbooking materials. Stitching stuff is down to the ANchor cabinet, and about four feet across of rack space. Yarn is down to one aisle from two. The fabric section is also smaller than it used to be.

. I'm afraid it's not my thing, either. :)

Intetresting how few needleworkers scrapbook - or I've not met or heard of many who do. I guess we do our "fussy work" with a needle and thread. . .

Oh, part of me wishes I was more into scrapbooking. A couple of my friends do it, and they've created wonderful family mementoes and histories. But I find my needle and thread more relaxing. I also just discovered that I can crochet again. A bout of tendonitis had stopped me for a couple of years, but I tried a small pattern for my grandma this summer, and discovered I could do it pain free once more. It means I have something to do on car trips again. Yay!

I actually really enjoyed it while I was doing it, but then my "pusher" moved away and I just haven't done anything more with it. I have used some of the tools to do paper collage and ATCs, though.

I do have one nice thing, my younger granddaughter gave me two sheets of masses of cut up baby pics, not just her, all of them, just made into collages and they are between two pieces of glass with the edges bound in special tape (there is a French name for this but I can't recall it). I was using it at the time as a mouse pad but now keep it on my desk and put coffee on it, or use it when I am writing something.

It is nice, and amusing, but it was a whole heap of cut up pics which I am not sure is a good thing.

Count me as one who does both. I love papercrafting of any type and needlework. Though I tend to work/play at one more than the other for periods of time. I only go into card shops looking for inspiration. Saves me tons of money.

But I think the scrapbooking thing is slowing down. The two big chain stores for scrapbooking near me have both closed in the past year - after they ran the little local stores out of business.

Hi Linda,

It's the same here in many chain stores. Our Walmart only has a few leaflets, Anchor threads and they don't even have the small kits anymore. I always had to resort to online shopping as I live in a small northern Canadian community. I don't think anybody in this town even knows what cross-stitch is.

BUT there are still many local shops hanging on and of course the ever more popular internet shopping and mail order catalogs. Almost all cross-stitch designers and manufacturers have their own shopping carts nowadays. The industry is not dead yet.

I LOVE cross-stitch. For me I will always cross-stitch till the day I die.

Like every old is new again. It will come back strong. Keep stitching everyone!
