only slightly OT: tunisian crochet

Well, if I get the nerve up, I'll make two.

After a day of errands and house work and whatever else the day throws at me, I'd love to have something to put on that looked like clothes but felt more like a favorite nightgown.

That would be nice, I like full length lol

Nobody around here save that obdurate cat so it really doesn't matter what I wear. That cat (I renamed her Hidiyeh, Persian for Gift) is ever so gradually coming round. I think by the end of this month she will like me and allow me to handle her more and clip her nails. I am allowed to groom her now which is good because she was getting snarls, but she is totally nocturnal as far as I know. She only howls occasionally through the night.

I look at it this way, I now know she is ten years old which would make her an old lady of 70 and she did not take kindly to this sudden switch of owners and apartments. I can understand that - I'd be more of a bitch too in such circumstances lol

I've got several muu muu style things in my closet ... found 'em in the sleepwear department. They're great to wear when it's hot. I've also got several long a-lines made out of lightweight french terry (at least I think that's the fabric) that cover unshaved legs nicely.

My sister was married on one hot sticky August day. We were in polyester (this was the early 70s).

A family friend who was six months pregnant came in a djellaba. Long cool cotton, and as she confessed later, nothing on underneath. :) She was probably the only comfortably dressed that day.

The french terry ones sound prefect for summer!!

Will haunt various discount houses for them.

Good for her!

I loved caftans things too. Had a whole supply of them from when the parents lived overseas.

Here's a page from Beall's on line with a bunch of casual loungy type dresses. I didn't look too carefully to see if these are french terry but I know they carry them. I've gotten them in the store.

If what you want isn't available on line, let me know and I will be your personal French Terry shopper and have it sent to you.

That's exactly what I do. I've made a long dress that's my "loungewear" dress. I change into it after dinner and am comfortable, but it's dressier than a nightgown, so if someone comes over unexpectedly - a neighbor dropping something at the door, DD's friends coming in with her, etc - I don't feel like I'm caught in my pjs.

Time to make another, though....this one's starting to fray!

Yesterday I was outside pulling weeds, and my across-the-street neighbor was out in his garden. I joked with him, "It's hard to be decent while gardening," because I was in a dress and aware of having to be careful how I moved so as not to "flash" the neighborhood, and the scoop neck revealing too much in the other direction. "I guess gardening was big with Victorian ladies, but they had long dresses and high necks." He laughed and said, "You should put on shorts," but I didn't want to change clothes for just 1/2 hour of pulling weeds while waiting for the oven to heat for making dinner, then have to change again.

If I ever get out of this house this week, I'll check with Beall's and see if they have any there.

I have to admit - you guys are all giving me the shudders! I can't stand that granny dress style - those ruffles and the designs they come in. Yeick!

Now for me, comfort is a jersey knit tank dress. I own a couple that come down past my knees, but are loose, When I was younger, I owned several really simple dresses that were basically a piece of calico type material (must have had some polyester though as they were pretty wrinkle resistant) with elastic at the top and under the bust, with spaghetti straps. Easy to put on, cool, comfy, etc.

Of course, each to her own - I'd love to see all of you in your matching grannies!

What I want is loose and comfortable but wearable if some one drops by or DH wants to go get a coffee.

Anything below the knee would do. Built in bra would be even better. Even my

18 hour binds after while...

The granny dress I had - and even wore to work - as I recall had a round neck (which had a little frill of same fabric on it), short puff sleeves with elastic, ankle length with a self frill round the bottom. It was made of some light weight cotton with smallish flowers on it, dark green background. Washed like a rag and just needed a touch up with the iron, but it was cotton, NOT polyester lol The skirt part was fairly full, when I think about it maybe it was gathered with elastic immediately under the bust.

Have to say, it didn't resemble the ones in those catalogues at all. Those were just dresses my elderly neighbour wore, and I would not have been caught dead in one of those lol

Just for clarification - this is what I think of when I think granny dress:

Still have to say - not quite my style :)

Of course, I don't need an 18 hour underwire either LOL - not quite that blessed!
