OT: DD's Cake Website

Hi Guys, Wanted to take a minute and brag on DD (remember, she's a chef). She has finally gotten her catering website online at

. It's not finished yet -- still some bugs to iron out but there are a few photos of some of her cakes in the Portfolio section. She also does catering but doesn't have any food type photos up yet. I know none of you would need her services. I just wanted to brag on her a bit :-). She has just finished the Masters Course at the Wilton Center outside of Chicago, IL. If you look at the cake photos, the one of the large white wedding cake with the purple flowers is the piece she did for her "final exam". The cake is not cake, it's styrofoam, but the frosting and all of the decorations are made from royal icing and look almost real. This stuff is NOT like the regular roses, etc. that you see on most cakes and it really lovely. Also, there is a cake with absolutely darling bumble bees that DD made from fondant. I told DD that next time she makes them she needs to add what we call "fairy dust" to the wings to make them sparkle. I'm not sure what the fairy dust is made from (probably sugar) but it is edible and sparkles beautifully. Anyway, that all. Just wanted to take a minute and brag on DD. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

The cakes are gorgeous. You might suggest, however, that she edit her home page -- she says "I enjoy working people". Perhaps it would be better to say "working with people."

WOW!

Does she deliver?

LOLOL -- I was on the phone with her for almost an hour going through the text and that was one of the things she was going to change!! There were several other typos, missing words, etc. and that one obviously didn't get fixed. Thanks for letting me know -- I will send her an e-mail about it. Bruce e-mailed that when he looked at the site, it took forever for the photos to open up and they were full size!!!!!! THAT must have been a total P.I.T.A. Has anyone else had this problem? When using aoHell, I have no problem and when using Netscape the photos are a bit slow but they aren't full size. I'll have to go to the site using the DSL provider link (can't remember what that one is) and see if there's a problem. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

You have every right to brag on your daughter. Those are lovely cakes. And very tastefully decorated (pun intended).

First off, I apologize for cross posting -- at least that's what I think I did since I see the RCTN people over at RCTQ and vice versa. VBS -- I'm a dolt sometimes!!! Next, the website is not an aol thing nor is it free. I'm pretty sure DD said she pays $12.00/month to Web.com, the people who host the site. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I have e-mailed DD about the problems some are having with the photos. I'm not sure what can be done about it but it will give her something to look into. As for slow loading, I have instant photos when I go to the site using AOL, almost instant when using Internet Explorer and it takes a bit longer (but not much) when using Netscape. Not being any sort of computer person, I have NO idea why this happens!! But thanks for the heads up -- I'll make sure DD looks into it. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

In my former life, I was somewhat of a geekess ... the pictures are slow to load because they haven't been actually resized and optimized for web viewing. The very large pictures have been dynamically crammed into little spaces on the web page. For example, the daisy cake picture is actually 2560 by 1920 pixels; however, her web page code is saying to display it 130 pixels wide. To be user friendly, your daughter should use a photo editing program to lessen the number of pixels and to create real, not psuedo, thumbnails.

Email me if you want more information.

Mary, I visited, and what I could see was just lovely! But now I'm wondering about a couple of things. As with Bruce, the photos did take a long time to open, but -- as you said -- they were small. Were they supposed to be clickable links to larger pics? They didn't seem to be, but I was wondering because of what you said about Bruce's experience.

That should not make a difference, the free space I have with my server still allows me to post as thumbnails linked to full size pics. This was crossposted and I took out the quilting group.

This is still cross posted, I took it out again.

I'll tell DD about the Yahoo hosting site. I think the only reason she went with Web.com is because someone told her about it. Like me, she's pretty much a novice about this sort of stuff. Fortunately, I actually sort of understood the point that Bruce and Anne made. I'm not sure if DD has any sort of photo editing program but I will tell her that she needs to make the file size smaller. When I spoke with her about all of this, she told me that the $12/mo doesn't allow for clickable thumbnails that lead to full size photos. I make sure to tell her to check out the Yahoo site and see if that is something available with them. I TOLD her she needed to have photos that show a close up of the detail on the more "entertaining" cakes -- the one with the bumble bees for instance. Anyway, thanks to everyone for the input and thanks you Sheena for eliminating the cross posting thing. It never dawned on MOI to take it out -- VBS!!! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

She doesn't need a photo editing programme. If she looks under Microsoft Power Toys for XP, one of the toys is a photo resizing tool. She would simply click on the pic and reduce to smallest size, she would still have her original one, but it would add the small one.

The medium size it produces is ideal for binary groups, just the right size.

I know, posting to my post, but I meant to mention, her easiest method is to use something like Web Album Generator (free edition) then when she has all her pics in a row, she zaps them with that and they will be ready prepared with thumbnails etc. to go on her site.

that, it also resizes them properly as well.
