OT: Earthquake!!!!!!! In VA!!!

So....did you folks in the DC area feel it?

I'm expecting you did at 5.9.

When I returned from CA never expected to hear of an earthquake in VA. Felt one in Maine a few years ago. Of course nothing compares to Northridge (I felt it but no damage, too far away) and Whittier, saw the power lines and telephone poles swaying the the lab parking lot.

Hope all is ok everywhere.

Felt it in Baltimore. I was outdoors, eating lunch, so only experienced a mild tremor. DH was at home, and said it was really scary...he was in the room over the garage, on a slab base, so really rockin'. A coworker's friend called to say he'd just entered Crate and Barrel at the mega-mall at that moment, and things were crashing down all over, flying off the shelves.

Funny how it was so different indoors and outdoors!

(I was sitting on a bench in the columbarium, and was just pleased that it wasn't the Last Coming, and doors didn't fly open!)

Felt it for sure. Glad it didn't last longer or wasn't stronger. I don't think my poor townhouse would be standing. Totally freaked out my big cat. When he came out of hiding he was tiptoeing around the house like he expected something to fall on him.

Good thing. Glad everyone survived without major damage.

We were in the HS library, for the primary election here in VA. There was work being done at the school, and we'd just had the 3rd test of the fire alarm, not 15 secs earlier. Then it felt like a freight train coming threw

- reminded me of some scene in Field of Dreams. Being the calm leader that I am, I said "could be they're blowing out the HVAC system." DH then replied - "it's an earthquake - the floor is still shaking." We did a big check around the library, went into the hall by the office, and the librarian told me they thought it was the guys working on the roof . A kid came by and said that one of the science teachers said it was an earthquake. Pretty strong here just by proximity and direction that it radiated.

Fortunately no real problems - some plants in pots tipped over. One of the voters told us his dogs were freaking - I asked him if he could check on mine -who had the temporary doggie door available - and he said "nah - the dog will be fine." The pollbook worker was so upset that my distant neighbor wouldn't check on the dog. But all was well. Our guess that Puckster just buried himself in the family room couch.

When I came back from San Antonio -DH told me that in one of the after shocks the big issue - a temporary blind up in our room semi-disintegrated and he woke up to blinding sunlight, and flashing the backyard neighbors ;^) (actually, our windows are somewhat dark from the exterior, so I don't think any public nudity laws were broken.

So, being in San Antonio I missed earthquake aftermath, and Irene. But, several attendeees & a couple of teachers were definitely late getting in. For me, just a delayed (temporarily lost) bag. And, to make up for missing the wet, it was the hottest week in SA, plus a record setting high temp couple of days - well over 100 - 105, 106, 107. Ugh. And humid.
