Happy Birthday to Canada. It's so nice to actually like and respect one of our closest neighbors.

Thanks

I have my big Maple Leaf flag out hanging off the deck and blowing in the stiff breeze we are having. I can hear (faintly) the music from downtown, and listened to some of the celebrations from Parliament Hill on CBC.

Friends are coming for dinner, and then we are going to watch the fireworks which we can do from our front yard since the display is just in the park down the street.

143 years young - Go Canada!!!!

It is indeed. It was one of the nicest Canada Days here in Halifax that I have seen in recent times. Lots of people out and about celebrating capped with lovely fireworks (albeit short) last evening.

Guess I should introduce myself (although one person here already knows me). My name is Donna and I live in Halifax, NS with my son Kevin and our cats Abigail and Logan. I'm a retired librarian who has a multitude of hobbies ...reading and knitting are the biggies.

I have been busy knitting hats. About to branch out in socks. I might have a little craft sale during the holiday season or rent a table at one of the larger fairs. Not sure how to sell my work and would appreciate any ideas from fellow crafters.

Hello there ! When you see Joan posting, she is the librarian I told you about (always editing/proof reading my stuff for me) - of course she has the misfortune to still be tied to the anvil lol

welcome, Donna!

I don't knit, and don't have time to start another craft. But socks and Orenburg lace shawls are the two things that tempt me to take it up!

Hi Donna, welcome to the group from a Dartmouthian! I agree, this was a great Canada Day in our area. I think maybe the visit this week by the Queen may have helped put people in a festive, patriotic mood. I hear that the fireworks in Bedford were excellent! Better than what Halifax usually has. Maybe an idea for another year.

I have a friend who is a prolific knitter and does quite well at the smaller local fairs....usually those put on by Legions, Sportsplexs etc. You will never get adequately paid for the time put into your projects but if it's something you do anyhow for enjoyment then making a modest profit is always nice. Good luck!

Ah! A fellow ""bookie" . Her time will come to have the freedom of retirement. After 27 years at the school, I miss the students but definitely enjoy the ability to do what I want when I want.

Hi Sue......

I don't think I would have the patience for lace knitting although it'd beautiful. I have periodically taken a stab at cross stitch and it's the same thing. It requires patience and I generally get frustrated and drop the project. I do enjoy sewing as well as knitting and I've dabbled in crochet as well.

I could see the Bedford fireworks from my window and they were VERY nice. A large number of people in this area also had home fireworks so it was quite festive. Too bad the rain was so bad on Monday or we would have been out to see the Queen as well.

I'm not that prolific but I have 25-30 hats that I've made since last fall with more in the works. I started off with a charity project to knit chemo caps and went from there to other designs after I passed the chemo caps along to the appropriate hospital department.

I'm looking to fund my addiction with a small profit perhaps. Thanks for the tips. The Legion might be a good idea. There's one not too far from me and I could see if they ever have a craft fair. Some of the larger ones like at the Sportsplex charge quite a bit for a table so I'm not sure if I could afford those. I will also try Etsy.

I enjoy fireworks myself but didn't venture out to see any this year. I always feel sorry for dogs who are left outside while they are on as it really hurts their ears and frightens them. The minute they started you could hear the barking in our area and the home fireworks continued for quite awhile.

A lot of Community centers host fairs at that time and they would be more reasonable.

There are a couple of neighbors near me who own dogs but they were smart and kept them indoors that evening. My son used to enjoy them. We would head to a good viewing point every year. He's lost interest in them now and so have I.

Good idea. I'll start to look for things like that in September. I should have quite a few hats to sell by then and maybe some socks too.

Hmmm. From Halifax......about to branch out in socks.....wonder whose influence *you* are under! :)

Welcome, Donna! What did you do as a librarian? I work in the cataloging dept. of a university library in ND. Yes, I'm still "tied to the anvil" as a certain someone put it, but my tether is *very* long and loose and the anvil is very light! :)

My SisIL in Regina sent me a picture of her son (in the Air Force) meeting the Queen! I have no idea where it was taken or what the occasion was.

She was also out in Manitoba, then Ontario. Yesterday, before she left for NY she was trotting around in 40C heat, aged 84 and carrying on like it was a normal temp day. Life in the old girl yet, reckon she will make the century like her mother.

I sure hope so!! She is certainly an example to the "poor me" whiners of this world. She has to get very tired, one would think. She is just ten years older than me...and I get weary on occasions!
