OT: I HATE This *((**&&*%&^ laptop!!!

Well, not really the laptop but not having my "regular" AOL!!! Time for another rant -- LOLOL! I *still* haven['t gotten around to finding someone to help me figure out all the new computer problems. I'm still accessing AOL using Internet Explorer -- that's how I get & send my e-mail. I've had to have DH e-mail me all my favourite places links and then I saved them to the fav places on IE. I'm pissed off because I can't figure out how to send a link in an e-mail. With my "regular" AOL, I just click and drag from my Fav Paces to my e-mail. With the way I am having to acces my mail, I can't get to the fav places on IE and put what I want into an AOL e-mail! I really don't mind learning to do something new but it ***would*** be nice if I had directions! This is just another reason why I don't want to change things when it comes to the computer! Most of the time there are no directions when something is changed. If there are directions, they are so mixed up that it is almost impossible for a non-techie (that means MOI) to decipher! VBS -- just another thing to deal with. I absolutely MUST find someone to help me figure out how to do stuff and fix my computer problems. There is a Radio Shack (this little town is moving right int the 21st century) up here so I think that might be a place to start. If THEY don't know anyone who "does" computer stuff, I'll have to find someone "in town". OK -- rant over. Time to go vacumn the bedroom with my NEW canister vac!!! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I keep AOL because I know it and am comfortable with it. As for Staples, the closest one is about 150 miles away :-))). I am seriously thinking about taking it there when I am down in the Valley next month. I will be taking the SMDGD to the San Diego Zoo the first week of August so I might take it in after I return but before I go back up the mountain. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I think that's your best plan, either a teen or Staples and I can only urge you to get the person to show how simple it is to work without aol between you and everything you do. It's like always having steps in the way of the direction you want to take !

Hi

Maybe I can help with "AOL download" you should find that in the list the is a AOL Download you can click on which will give you screen which has lots of choices for downloading AOL to your computer. Members or newbies. As you are a Member you should be able to download AOL and input your password and it will give you your usual AOL screen with favourites, emails etc etc. I have done this lots of times when I have a new computer. Now if you are saying that you have AOL icon on your computer but it does not connect then I would suggest that you try uninstalling AOL and installing again as above. There is no reason why you should not be able to do this as it is quite simply and you just follow instructions. I don't know if this link will work but you could type it into the internet address line.

I have misunderstood and your problems are different, then Iapologise but hope that the above will enable you to access AOL. Hope you get it sorted. I know what you mean about being comfortable with AOL. I have been with them for years and although from time to time I have had problems they are still the cheapest I can get and give me good speeds here in the UK.

I DO have the AOL icon showing and it worked great when I was still in GA. Once here, it just won't work! DH uninstalled it and reinstalled it and it STILL doesn't want to work! When I click on the icon, AOL tries to come up but seems to get hung up when trying to find a way to connect to the 'net. I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that I am using wi-fi. The ISP that I am using up here is Frontier.net and I'm sure there is some sort of step that I am missing. I KNOW there is going to be some sort of easy fix for this but I just haven't taken the time to find someone to help me. I STILL can't use any of the newsreaders I have installed -- both of which worked fine in GA but not once I got here. This all tells me that there is some glitch with the Frontier.net wi-fim connection. Then again, I wonder if I am missing a wee bit of knowledge like having to do some sort of step to get things that worked with a regular connection (not dial up -- is it called broadband?) that doesn't work with a wi-fi connection? There are so many little bits of knowledge that a person must know to get things to work properly -- things like only click once or you must click twice, etc. VBS -- using Google is a P.I.T.A. because there is soooo much crap posted and there are n0o filters. Oh well, at least it gives me something to kvetch about -- LOLOL! I can't even fuss about DH because he's there and I'm here so all the irritating stuff he does goes unnoticed -- LOLOLOL! Thank You, Thanks You,Thank You!!!!!! This looks like it might be the info I need. I'll have to wait to work on this because I don't have any way to print up the info and once I try to get to AOL I won't be able to see the info -- LOLOL! I'm taking the laptop with me to the Valley so I will bring up the info on DD's computer, print it up and then try to get my computer working. I had DH look at the Frontier. net page to see if there was anything to help me. He looked there about as good as he looks when he has misplaced something!!!! Oh well, better late than never :-). I've worked with computers for over 40 yrs (makes me very old) and they can still aggravate me sometimes. To solve your problems,

  1. Contact your internet service provider, Frontier. Demand that they come to your home to set up your email. Demand nicely, but firmly.
  2. Ask them about a nice young person that would come sit down with you and tutor you on the things you're having problems with. Or, contact the local high school, I know there are smart, nice, young people there who would like to help. Or the local college.

Best of luck to you, if I lived closer, I'd be right there to help. Michelle G.

Excellent suggestions. I'd add one thing - Mary, honestly, I do believe that you should offer to pay someone to come and help you. So they'll be professional - even if a college kid - and not just get impatient or leave you hanging. With all the aggro you seem to have, it has to be worth it.

Tons of us in that same boat....but sometimes I think it's better to get a knowledgeable stranger who won't have the friend/relative frustration factor going.

Hope it sorts out. Ellice

I realize that I have AOL 9.5 loaded and the directions at Frontier say I should have 9.0 -- plain 9.0 NOT Optimized (whatever THAT means). So, I Google "download aol 9.0" and get lots and lots of hits

-- all of which will let me download 9.5 but NOT 9.0. I've only gone through the first two pages so I will keep looking for a site that will let me download 9.0. I'm off to the Valley tomorrow and will be taking the laptop with MOI. It will be interesting to see if stuff works down there but not up[ here. If that's the case, then the problem is with Frontier and I will be sending a nasty-gram to them! CiaoMeow >^;;^<
