OT: men wearing ear-rings

A man is at work one day when he notices that his co-worker is wearing an earring. The man knows his co-worker to be a normally conservative fellow, and is curious about his sudden change in "fashion sense" so he walks up to him and says, "I didn't know you were into earrings." "Don't make such a big deal, it's only an earring," he replies sheepishly. His friend falls silent for a few minutes, but then his curiosity prods him to ask "So, how long have you been wearing one?" "Ever since my wife found it in my truck."

Mirjam, it's a joke about adultery. Bruce is not making any criticism of men who wear earrings.

Thank you Johno , i really didn`t understand that `joke` . I see it more as a very Male kind of reaction, to a rather common Human situation. By the way how come you didn`t consider my question a kind of Joke ???? Maybe if you read it Again you will GET it ,, mirjam

Hi Mirjam,

Actually I did consider that, but then I thought that if I presumed your comment was just a joke, then maybe I was being a bit insensitive. No worries. In fact I thought Bruce's joke was very funny. Now that's a male reaction!

Tut, tut Miriam. A kilt is worn by some Scotsmen, a skirt is worn by women. Good variation on the joke though.

Since i translated that joke from Hebrew, i was correct , because here it is called "A Scotish Skirt " when onr dresses with the kilt ,,,, mirjam

Probably more accurate to translate the Hebrew term "A Scottish skirt" into the word "a kilt"

Thank you for this Better terminology ,, i will remamber it next time ,, By the way Dutch Sewing mags also reffer to this pattern as `en schotse rok ` same as in Hebrew a scotish skirt !!! mirjam

Interesting. The kilt is only worn by a few people and even then only by people in pipe bands or other folk on special occasions such as weddings, ceilidhs and Burns night. Very, very few men wear them as their regular, everyday wear unless they are a part of the Scottish tourist industry. Here in Orkney the kilt is hardly ever seen as Orkney is more akin to Norway than Scotland - Orkney was part of the kingdom of Norway until about 500 years ago.

And yet again, should we care (as Scots) what the Dutch people call kilts ?? Just because two are wrong, does NOT make it right.

I hope i can for a change say/write something seriously, without some of you , trying to just be unkind. Clothes that become trendy or loved for their shape or easiness of making , get a name by which MOST people will remember them ,,, the term Kilt is of course the proper name of this STYLE of making a skirt,,,, but in the Fashion industry , each Loved or trendy Pattern gets a name that makes it recognizeable to people, all over the Globus. . In the Textile & Fashion industry & tradition , many cloths and/or dressing styles are called by their ORIGINAL location, We have Calcatta cloth , we have Damask cloth , There used to be 'A Robe a` l`Anglaize " Thus the Name `Scotish skirt `, just describes this pattern of sewing a skirt in this fashion. By the way , none of my English sewing books mentions the term kilt. One of the reasons ,[ besides it`s obvious nice silhouette], of the popularity of this skirts, is that you can easily adjust them to changing measurements, and even easily rip them, iron them and than you have enough material to recycle them into another kind of clothing item ... mirjam

Many people, like me think , calling those Skirt=3Dkilts A Scotish Skirt, is a respectful way to acknowledge the loveliness, coziness, usefullness and elgance such a skirts adds to the wearer, and naming it thus , is a kind of Salute to the Scotish Inventfullness ,,,, What is with you that you always have to Twist things to the bad side ? mirjam

Berets are berets=3D A soft style hat. That has been around probbaly

2000 years, they can be cut in 2 or more parts , they can be easily felted, and they can be worn almost every where and historicly they are coneccted to the Frensh Dressing style.

Beanies ? Sorry none of my Milinery or sewing books , mentions this, i see Toques , cones , Berets, Straw hats , coif, hood, snood, top hat , sombrero , mob cap, pill box hat, kafiyyeh ,,,,,,etc..... beannies ?????????? have never met that term as a head dress ,, I have seen it as used for a SLANG for head or brain ,,,, mirjam
