OT: On your mark - get set

Mark your calenders folks!! In just 32 days the world as we know it will come to an end!!

2009 is the year when all those of scotch descent who are willing and able will descend upon the fine island of Scotland to party at Scotland's home coming. Those who are not of scotch descent can only gaze in wonderment as the Scottish lasses and laddies consume gallons of scotch to wash away the taste of haggis. I think in honor of the celebrations that the decent thing to do in 2009 would be to stop calling scotch a whisky. Call it underarm deodorant, call it anything, but don't call it whisky.

I've heard nothing about it up here, Fred. Mind you, Orkney did not become part of Scotland until about 500 years ago so the culture here is more Scandanavian than Celtic (or Pictish!) I'm English and a beer drinker (home brewed, of course) and don't like the smell or taste of spirits in any shape or form so I can't really comment on whisky (or whiskey). However, the folk at and may have strong views on the matter

I have seen advertisments here and in the USA about it the homecoming. Could it all be just clan-distine, McGregor or whatever?

We have peopled the world - my father once remarked that it didn't matter where you went, be it a village in the back end of Malaya or Africa, there would be a Scot there for sure.

I've heard of Bath buns, Belgian buns, Boston buns, cinnamon buns, cheese buns, Chelsea buns, currant buns and hot cross buns but I've never come across any Robbie Buns There is a Homecoming 2009 event in Orkney but Orkney has its own poet - George Mackay Brown (1921-1996) . And the Master of the Queen's Music is Sir Peter Maxwell Davies who lives on the island of Sanday, just a few miles across the water from Stronsay.

Could I just point out that the people aren`t "Scotch" - that`s the Whisky. Whiskey is Irish!

May I also add that you haven`t lived until you`ve tasted Talisker, that nectar from the Isle of Skye with a definite tang of the sea about it.

Good health and cheers, anyway!

Oh, I remember my first sip of Talisker. It made my eyes water! It was lovely, and I have loved it ever since.
