OT Ping Olwyn Mary: New Orleans advice

Hi Olwyn Mary, A friend of mine is going to be in New Orleans for two days staying near the French Quarter. He's looking for advice for what would be the best places to see by doing a walking tour of New Orleans. He was also wondering if you could recommend a great place to listen to jazz, and a great place to eat. If the two things could be combined even better. He only has two days and wants to make it the best trip he can. They are a middle aged couple looking to do a quick best of tour. Thanks for any advice you have.

When is he travelling? I left N.O. this morning for a visit with the grandbabies, and will be here in Sacramento for a week. Whereabouts "near" the Quarter is he staying? In the quarter itself, right on Jackson Square, and also in the Garden District, there is a visitors center which has lots of free brochures on self-guided walking tours. Also, there are walking tours led by experienced leaders, for a fee.

For traditional jazz, no question, Preservation Hall.

Where to eat? Well almost anywhere which is not part of a chain. What are his tastes (French, Creole, Cajun?) and what is his budget?

Liar. :) Thought you said you were already in Sacto. :)

Have we decided yet WHERE we're going to have lunch? I know good places in/near downtown for Japanese, generic European and Mexican. Cathy, your input?

Doesn't look like it'll be hot enough to necessitate a trip to the ice cream shoppe instead of "real lunch".

Olwyn, do you have any idea where you want to eat? Is there somewhere special that you want to go?

Just let me know the time and place, and I'll be there.

I was just there for Carnivale and got to visit with Olwyn Mary & her wonderful dh :-). I have arthritis and walk with a cane and I STILL manage to walk all over the French Quarter. As O.M. said, there are all sorts of places to get brochures that will help in doing a walking tour. If your friend just wants to walk through and see the French Quarter, he just has to step out of his hotel and start walking. DH and I usually start at the river over by the aquarium and start walking up and down the streets. It's really a very small area and quite easily walked through and seen in a day. To truly "appreciate" the French Quarter, you would probably have to live there for years :-). Tell your friend to go hungry -- the food is unbelievable and the deserts are even better :-))). Whaddya mean, liar??? We arrived Friday afternoon, after having got up at 5:00 a.m. (that's

3:a.m. CA time) DS picked us up at the airport, took us to the hotel, then went back to work while we unpacked etc. Then he and DIL arrived with the babies, and we had dinner in the hotel coffeeshop. After that, with a 3.5 yr child and 22 mos. child, we were ready for bed!! Mind you, the kids are delightful, their parents don't allow them to be brats, but we were tired. We'll be spending today and tomorrow with them, probably resting all day Monday, then I have Tuesday during the day blocked out for Karen and Cathy. Generic European (or Midwestern American) cuisine is fine by me. ** Posted from

OK. Cafe Marika is a little hole in the wall, run by authentic Europeans, with authentic accents and authentic recipes. They're open limited hours, but if they run us out when they close, there are other places within a block that we can sit and order a Coke to continue the conversation.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd, it's right by Newsbeat's new location, which I haven't been in yet. They have a nice selection of crafty type magazines, including some of the British XS ones.

I wish I could join you. Now tell me--What's an Authentic European. More to the point, what's a Fake European?

We have a lot of ethnics running restaurants that have nothing to do with their own cuisine. One set of Mexican brothers in town are running restaurants two doors apart, one serves authentic Mexican cuisine. The other serves fake Italian -- popular with the Americans, but not anything you'd find on the table in a real Italian home. But then, he's not Italian, so how would he know what's authentic?

Cafe Marika, OTOH, is run by a H&W who grew up in Europe, immigrated to the US, started a restaurant with family recipes.

Contact me offlist nearer the time. Also, find out if he wants to do the "breakfast at Brennan's, Dinner at Antoine's" type thing----that is the forty bucks breakfast, three figures per head dinner which I only do on someone else's corporate plastic--------- or whether he wants something a little less overpriced but just as tasty.

That's pretty much true. ANY of the local hotels should have a walking tour type map of the French Quarter and surrounding area. The Concierge desk at his hotel should also be helpful. Another fun and inexpensive thing to do would be to ride the trolley just to get a chance to see parts of the city that is away from the Quarter. There is a great trolley that runs along the river that DH and I take from the Poydras St. stop to the French Quarter when I am too tired to walk. Just riding the streetcar that runs up and down Canal would be great too! Anyway, if your friend is staying anywhere near the Quarter ANd if he is in just moderately good health, he should be able to walk all over the Quarter, see it all and then get back to his hotel in one day. This doesn't allow for a lot of time to window shop, etc. but you still get too see everything. Hope he has a great time. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Just back from having lunch with Olwyn. (Cathy was called into work, but maybe another time she and I can work it out.)

A good time was had by all.

No LNS any more, so the best I could do was offer her a look-see into Newsbeat, which has a nice selection of magazines.

I used to live in N.O. and whenever we go to visit we always go to Mother's (Restaurant) on Poydras.
