OT (sort of) - glaze alternative

None of the local stores carry any face cabochons that could be used on my beaded and embroidery embellished dolls. Finished cabs can be bought on ebay and etsy but it's hard to tell what size they are. Despite not wanting to stock up on more craft items that might be used once or twice, armed with a coupon, I bought a sculpey push mold for faces and one package of clay at Joann's. Unless I get really drunk, I have no intention of painting face details but I would like to seal or 'finish' the clay with a glaze. A brief foray online didn't turn up any local shops that carry the glaze and I refuse to pay exorbitant shipping and handling for a small ticket item.

Could nail polish be used?

The mother of a friend of mine is a ceramic artist. I'll ask her later today and see what she says. Sometimes when there's something I want to order online but the shipping is just as much as the item (or more), I try and find a discount or coupon code for free shipping for that website. I can almost always find one, especially for the bigger online stores. I'd see if you can come up with one through google.

Ok. This is what she said. Actual "glaze" would need to be fired in a kiln. Don't use nail polish. If the purpose is just to seal them and not color them, you *could* use it, but it most likely will be difficult to get it on evenly. She said that they sell a spray sealant in the ceramic mold section at Walmart that shouldn't be expensive (if Walmart is in your neck of the woods and you aren't opposed to shopping there). She said to do one light coat approximately 12" away, let it dry (just takes a couple minutes), and then do a second light coat.

Thanks for the information. The clay is polymer so its properties might be a little different than real clay; directions say to bake it for awhile in the stove or toaster oven if one doesn't own a clay oven. The clay package cost a little more than $2 so even frugal me doesn't mind experimenting with different finishers ;-)

When the morning coffee kicks in, I'll make a batch of faces to play with.

P.S. I don't mind shopping at Walmart. While some of their practises might raise other people's hackles, I think it's neat that they've given 'senior' citizens who probably need the money opportunities to work as greeters.

Those seniors might be the people who formerly worked in American small manufacturing whose demise definitely lies at the door of the Walton kids who purchase all goods from offshore, contrary to the aims of Sam originally.
