OT: USA Political Question

I'm a bit lazy with no time to hoggle-google looking for an answer to something I've wondered about for weeks, so could someone here please help me out?

Presidential candidates pick their running mates who may become Vice-President or President if the President becomes incapacitated. The running mates are picked not elected at the party level. My question is, do the running mates ride along on the coat tails of the Presidential candidates or are they elected by the citizens? If the running mates are elected by the citizens, is it possible this time around to have a Democratic President and (Lord forbid) a Republican Vice-President?

My memory is a bit weak but I don't think LBJ was actually elected as Vice-President and if he was be darned if I can remember who he would have defeated in order to get the position. Agnue??

My prediction - If the media projects Obama as the winner within 1-1/2 hours of poles closing Obama will actually win. If the media projection/confirmation takes longer - say - over two hours Obama will lose due to massive ballot manipulation. McCain will win steal the job just like Bush did.

The answer, which I'm sure won't surprise you, is yes and no. There are circumstances where the VP can be elected by the Electoral College, and where he/she can be appointed by the Senate but most of the time the VP just goes along with the President and that's that. Then there's the whole issue of the Electoral College. As usual with politics nothing is simple and since I haven't given that any thought since I went to school I googled it for you.

Here's the Wiki explanation for you too muddle through.

doesn't that clear it up for you ??? ;^))) Lucille

DS is in Civics and having a blast. He's been asking all sorts of interesting questions about what happens if a president elect dies before taking the oath of office, the electoral college, the effect of mudslinging politics (he hates attack ads from both sides because it clouds the "real issues"), the effects of the media on politics.... He's getting an A for a reason.

Sadly, Civics IS NOT required to graduate HS. The "survey course" taught in

8th grade is considered sufficient. (it is not)

Dear Fred, The Vice President is picked by the candidate and the party. Citizens have no say.In this process. The Media might protect the winner. But the votes tell all. And whom ever our President will be we will hope for the best. At Least we are free to choose. I might not always agree with President Bush,But at least we have not had an attack in awhile. Barbara

That's like saying my husband hasn't had an exacerbation in several years so his MS must be in permanent remission. It's an illogical argument. Bush has just made zealots more angry and more determined. It takes time to mastermind a plot like that of 9/11 and others around the globe. Time and money. They have the patience. Like a cat sitting in wait for its prey.

Fred, I believe you are thinking of Gerald Ford. He was appointed vice president upon Spiro Agnew's resignation and was later elevated to the presidence when Nixon resigned.

It used to be that we could have a VP and president of different parties, but under most scenarios today that is unlikely.

Just got to say, Dianne, I agree that it take years to mastermind such an attack as 9-11.......so, on who's watch was it masterminded, one wonders?

Can't blame the president for that one, he had only been in office 8 months. Also, no-one has a crystal ball; so the leaders have to rely on information they are given. We know that was messed up royally. CIA, FBI, NSA all feuding. On who's watch was that allowed to go on, do we think?

Whoever wins this election, I sure do hope they have some wise advisors. No one man/woman can possibly know every answer!

I recall - he was in a classroom full of 1st or 2nd graders (maybe it was kindergarteners or even preschoolers) - what did you want him to do

- jump up and rant and rave and scare the bejeebies out of those barely-older-than-a-toddler kiddies? Watch it again. You can see his eyes and his face harden when he is told (someone whispers in his ear), and he kept his cool so as not to frighten the children. It's not like jumping up at that exact moment would have put a stop to it. As soon as the current presentation was over, he excused himself and only then did he react.

The attack could have happened on ANYONEs watch.

But there was a funny, leaked a month or so afterward. When, later on

9/11/01, PappaB finally talked on the phone to BabyBush; BabyBush asked him where he was, PappaBush replied that he was in Minnesota (or was it Iowa?), BabyBush asked what he was doing there.... PappaBush replied "whadya think - ya grounded all the planes." DUH..........

Answer: 49th Missile Defense Battalion of Alaska National Guard.

Question: What is the ONLY National Guard unit on permanent active duty?

Answer: 49th Missile Defense Battalion of Alaska National Guard

Question: Who is the Commander in Chief of the 49th Missile Defense Battalion of Alaska National Guard?

Question: What U.S. governor has a higher classified security rating than either candidate of the Democrat Party? Answer: Governor Sarah Palin, Alaska

According to the Washington Post, she first met with McCain in February, but nobody ever found out. This is a woman used to keeping secrets. She can be entrusted with our national security, because she already is.

Hey there, yourself, Lucille

Yup, we do finally agree on political stuff. Even when we disagree, which we hve done, we are still nice to each other...and remain friends. That is why you are on my rather short list of "Favorite Democrats" LOL

You've given me something to think about. Should I be insulted or just surprised at my friend's lack of good judgment.

I will quote an old cliché, but if the shoe fits: "Some of my best friends are Republicans."

I didn't see it as his face hardening - I saw a bewildered, scared guy who had not idea of what he was going to do. A smarter man would simply have smiled at the kids, and said, "I'm sorry , but I have to go now - that's one of the problems with being the President"

Yes - the attack could have happened on anyones' watch. It was unfortunately that it happened on the watch of man who had absolutely no idea of anything.

I have. Like any solution to a complext problem, it has good points and bad ones. There is no perfect solution to the healthcare conundrum and whichever solution is implemented, there are going to be people who would prefer a different one. That's why it's called politics.

Thank you all for the info. November should be a very interesting month, especially for the media *intellectuals* who love to analyze the common voting types. I will have to listen to the results on radio - CNN or who-ever drives me around the bend. LOL

That reminds me of the dermatologist I went to a few years ago to treat a problem on my scalp. He informed me that I would have to take an antibiotic to clear up the problem once and for all. When I asked what antibiotic he was prescribing, he patted me on the head (remember I'm a little under 5' tall, under 100 lbs. and a senior citizen) and sweetly and loudly (there's nothing wrong with my hearing) told me don't worry dear, I will take good care of you. He then turned and walked out of the room.

When I finally calmed myself down from the condescending treatment, his nurse comes in with a prescription for an antibiotic that I'm allergic to. At that point I went slightly ballistic. By the time I got myself together and could actually get coherent words out of my mouth, the doctor came back in with a silly look on his fat face. By that time I could speak clearly and told him exactly what he could do with his prescription, turned and walk out of his office, never to return.

Sure he did. He has discussed improving various programs and he has made it clear that this will cost money. Where do you think our government gets money if not from taxes?
