OT: Weird Weather in NorHotlanta!!

So -- for the fourth day in a row, I will be stuck here at home because of the snow and ice!!! All of the stories any of you have seen on the weather or news are totally true!! Here north of NotHotlanta, we got about six inches of snow and it's all still there in the back yard because it's all shaded. The front gets sun but the snow hasn't melted much at all because it's been so cold. Sure is pretty tho' -- LOL! DH was stuck home both Monday & Tuesday. Yesterday, he did go to work but not until about 10:00 AM by which time the treacherous ice on the roads had gotten slushy. Same story today, too. He was home by about 3:30 PM yesterday because the temps were falling quickly and he wanted to get home before all the road slush had frozen again. The HIGH has been right around freezing since Sunday, too. Today is only expected to get to 30F. DH has taken my car because it has front wheel drive -- his old green truck (Booger by name) doesn't. Since I haven't had much experience driving on ice & snow, I don't even entertain the idea of leaving the house. I look at this as experience for when we live in the mountains in Lizard Land. We'll be at about 6,700 feet altitude (that's somewhere around 3,000 meters, maybe a hair more) and it gets cold & snowy up there in the winter. Not terrible bad like living in MN or ND but still an actual winter! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

"Key, Key, Keyrist but it's cold!!!!!!!!!"

I might add to Jim's warning! Stay inside! Keep DH inside! Keep the furrie ones inside!

From what I see on the news it is NOT COLD ENOUGH down there to knock off the gazillions of ice worms that could be lurking in that "itty bitty" snow that has fallen there. They can really plug up the tire treads on your vehicle and make for white knuckle driving.

When the temps drop down to about 0ºF and you can't hear the ice worms crunching you could try peeking outside but I would wait for -15ºF or +40ºF just to be on the safe side.

IIRC you guys down there do not bother to get an ice worm shot so I would be a little extra cautious. You and your DH would NEVER, NEVER want to have to polish off a litre of ice worm de-worming serum(Crown Royal). Makes one loose as a goose!

At the moment it is about -10ºF (-22ºC) here with about 2-1/2' of snow in the back yard.

Cassie has been having a ball tearing those little suckers apart every time DW lets HER DOG out to do you know what.

After he has finished partying he has the nerve to come into the house and shake the ice worm carcasses off and they fly all over the place. Then all of a sudden he becomes MY DOG and I have to clean up the sloppy mess.COL

Some day we should be so lucky as to be able to get our flu shot and ice worm shot all in one shot!

'Scuze me? Ice worms? LOL. I've never heard that term before but it's fitting somehow. :D

Funny you should say that, TM! Cheryl recently sent the following to me:

Diary of a Demented Snow Shoveler

DECEMBER 8

It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses print. So Romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!

DECEMBER 9

We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic Sight! Can there be a lovelier place in the whole world? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had! Shovelled for the first time in years and felt like a Boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplough came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life!

DECEMBER 12

The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a Disappointment! My neighbour tells me not to worry - we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much Snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is such A nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbour.

DECEMBER 14

Snow, lovely snow! 8 inches last night. The Temperature dropped to

-20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shovelling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplough came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shovelling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish I wouldn't huff and puff so.

DECEMBER 15

20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.

DECEMBER 16

Ice storm this morning. Fell on my butt on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like the devil. The Wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

DECEMBER 17

Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but Stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.

DECEMBER 20

Electricity is back on, but had another 14 inches of the white stuff last night. More shovelling! Took all day. The darn snowplough came by twice. Tried to find a neighbour kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob Says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.

DECEMBER 22

Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white stuff fell today, and it's so cold, it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to pee. By the time I got undressed, peed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plough on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says he's too busy. I think he lying.

DECEMBER 23

Only 2 inches of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she, nuts?!! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying.

DECEMBER 24

6 inches - snow packed so hard by snowplough, I broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch guy who drives that snow plow, I'll drag him through the snow by his hair and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 Miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the snowplough.

DECEMBER 25

Merry Christmas! 20 more inches of the slop tonight - snowed in the idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. I hate the snow! Then the snowplough driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's a idiot. If I have to watch "It's A Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave.

DECEMBER 26

Still snowed in. Why did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.

DECEMBER 27

Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze; plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes.

DECEMBER 28

Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. My wife is driving me crazy!!!

DECEMBER 29

10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?

DECEMBER 30

Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plow driver, and now he is suing me for a million dollars, not only for the beating I gave him. The wife went home to her mother. Nine more inches predicted.

DECEMBER 31

I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.

JANUARY 8

Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

Still think the snow is pretty??? LOL

Heyheyhey! Watch your mouth! I'd much rather live here than in your heat! lol We, at least, have houses with insulation that keep the cold out (and the heat out in summer). And, we actually *know* how to drive in the stuff! LOLOL!

Oh, yes! Although here in the balmy "south" (south of Fred, that is), we have wind worms, ice mice, snow snakes and blizzard lizards! One of our long-standing radio DJs came up with those terms *years* ago (like 40-odd years). And yes, they are fitting. :)

Joan - somehow I get the impression that Maureen thinks we are jesting!!

I saw some ice mice tracks yesterday but none of them other critters.

Ain't nothing funnier than watching Cassie digging for ice mice - funny until parts of the lawn and the top soil starts flying through the air. One would think that he would quit digging when he hit frozen ground but it just makes him dig faster.

The grand finale - DW screams, hollers, screeches, whatever, for him to quit digging and if you think he shakes the dirt off of his paws before racing past her into the warm house and hiding under the kitchen table you've been sampling too many Lawrence Welk bubbles! LOL.

I keep telling DW to stop feeding the birds and there won't be any scattered bird seed for the ice mices to go after - might as well talk to a wall!

BTW it isn't cold enough for the darm ice lice yet - but I'm sure they are a coming.

Well, not exactly "ice mice", but we saw a mouse the other night inside a wreath hanging alongside my front door, on a brick wall!

For Christmas I got a lovely little "designer wreath" (about 8" in diameter) made out of grains the birds would like, and because it was so pretty, I didn't want to hang it on the deck where nobody would see it. So I put it on the front porch, hoping the birds would find it under the overhang.

Well, Thursday night DH and I were out til about 10:00 pm, and as I was unlocking the front door, he noticed movement in the wreath - just a dark little shadow. A little tiny mouse was sitting inside the wreath, chomping away on the grains. The wreath is hanging about 6 feet up on a brick wall, so he must've run straight up the wall to find it. What a hoot!

Ah, come to DC to watch the incredible variety of bad driving in poor weather. Although, I do remember being one of the first cars stuck on the beltway some years back during a very bad cold spell. Roads had been cleared, but they had iced back after another ft plus and the American Legion bridge was closed - by the car a couple ahead of me doing at least 3 full donuts and landing in a barrier. The troopers closed the bridge (6 lanes each way) for about 3 or more hours while getting debris off, and then being convinced it could be crossed. They stood there and flagged 1 car at a time - so one could cross, and get about 1/3 of the way before sending the next. I kept thinking "I should've stayed in MD" , had gone to sit with the dogs which were living in XDH's, and he was away. But I didn't want to sleep in the house - stupid me. My next thought - the exit to my condo at Tyson's is a big, bad, banked Ess-curve. There were almost a solid line of cars parked in snow banks on both sides of the exit. Always remember car-skating across that bridge. Fortunately for us, we both have lived in real snow places, and learned to drive with the issues, but when it's bad, much better to stay in.

This saga is however, why I laugh - or DH laughs, when Cheryl suggests to us retiring to NH....Somehow I think there is something fundamentally wrong with retiring to a place where your retirement necessity gift is a snow-blower....

Ellice in cold but not bad NoVA (though our front yard is the shady side, and still snowed and icey)

Nice. Last time I had a real wreath on the front door - of the sheltered front porch - it got a full birds nest built into it...
