"Proper Stitch" - Darlene O'Steen

Just to let everyone know that this book is being reprinted! It is due out in the last part of November or the begining of December. I pre-ordered mine from Stitches N Things. Can't wait to get it. Rosanne

There will be some new things in it, too.

Too bad! That means my old one won't be worth $400 on Ebay anymore! :)

Um. It actually says - "if the stitch is not in this book, you don't need to stitch it! "

That's pretty darn arrogant. And judgemental.

But I do love my original copy of this book.

For those with LOTS of spare cash there is a copy of the 1994 edition of the book "Proper Stitch: A Guide for Counted Thread (ISBN: 0932437036) Darlene O'Steen" for sale at for 595 (five hundred and ninetyfive) US dollars. For those with not quite so much spare cash there are some copies on ebay for just under 300 (three hundred) US dollars...

Is the book that good? I can't imagine paying that much for a needlecraft book. I am now on the lookout for one at the second hand bookstores or will see about buying the reprint.

It's a very good book, if you're into stitching on linen. It was one of the first books I saw that addressed the history and execution of of various specialty stitches. It has very clear diagrams, and wonderful directions on ending and starting threads. The original edition was spiral bound with a hard cover and a wrapped binding, so that you could open the book to the page that you wanted and it would stay there.

I had a copy of the original printing, but never used it. I sold it about four years ago.

It's very difficult to find in second-hand bookstores online, as on-line booksellers can see how much it's going for on line.

This is one thing that very few stitch diagrams address: starting and ending threads. I am doing a bargello piece with crescent stitches and a diagonal sheaf stitch and I am having a really hard time with anchoring the stitches. especially the sheaf stitch which is done with slippery rayon. A couple of suggestions - you could try a waste knot, or an away knot. With the rayon - depending upon your ground - you could try a pin stitch (basically go up & down over a thread then start your real stitch over that.) On canvas the pin stitch just gets pulled down and hidden. I'm sure Dianne can give a better description than I've written.

There are a couple of really nice stitch books with numbered diagram - anything by Suzanne Howeren & Beth Robertson (Stitches for Effect, More Stitches..., Even More Stitches,.. And there's a pocket version). IIRC most of the instructions on the ANG stitch of the month site do have numbers so you know which way to work - up at 1 (the odd numbers) down at 2 (the even numbers).

Hope that helped. Rayon - sooooo much fun - good luck.

I'm hoping that is just a bad publicist and it doesn't actually claim that on the book.

And, no, I don't think it's THE needlework reference book. It's very good. But not in my top 5.

Check if you public library can get it for you through interlibrary loan. That way you can preview it and see if you think it's worth it. Even the US$45 that the reprint is going for.

It is a good book, but not the best I have seen. What it does do better than anyone else is show examples of compensating stitches for a variety of stitches.
